i agree with the corolla. the echo is not bad either.
What about a BMW 318?
^for a commuter car, (lots of mileage) i think it would be best to stay away from cars with high repair costs.
WHen I see a 318i, what runs through my mind is "Hey look! There's a car with all of the features and luxury of a Honda Civic, but with three times the repair costs!"
Thanks, but no thanks... although I did once get to drive a 318ti with an S54 M Coupe motor swap. That was a fun car.

On the last road trip she avg'd 48mpg in that stupid thing.. (while following my suburban towing the miata getting 12mpg :bash: )
She got it a year ago to replace a 95 Civic LX, '01 w/ 60k on it and paid about $7,000. Worth every penny..
Corollas aren't bad, but the echos are cheaper, and it's still got 108hp.. Hell, that's close to what some Miatas have ;)
thats what 1.5 liters will do for you. EPA estimate of 35 city/42 highway.
between the two- id get a corolla though. they still get over 30mpg city. and they look much better, have 130hp, and are larger. much more liveable. you can get a brand new base model for like 14K. i looked up the private party value on a 2003 base model, its about 10K. talk about holding its value.
