I''m not sure if this has been covered but the EGR valve controls your Nox values by cooling down the combustion chamber when it opens up and lets exhaust gasses enter the intake.
If i dont pass the test tmrw, ill just wait and buy the timing kit and get an actual mechanic that knows the miata and get it over with

Honestly i think it was the cat, but did the timing belt water pump and brake fluid change before i took the test, and it passed with flying colors
