Out - of town :(
See you at Einsteins.
ER always donates a large chunk of money to charity every year. We have traditionally supported the women's shelter in Mineral Wells, North Texas food banks, and Bikes for Kids. Last year we donated a bunch to Dennis Rothermich which he turned around and donated. He kind of amazed me that in his greatest time of need he was still thinking of charity before himself. He used some of the donated money for a reception after his funeral and the rest went to Bikes for Kids. If any of you have a favorite charity then please drop me a line and we can get them on our list. If you add up the payout you can see that the top 25 people in PAX end up paying the entire payout for the money winners. If we have over 25 entrants in PAX then a good chunk of that ends up at a charity somewhere.
I'm out :( unfortunately, family is going thru some $$ problems and they need my help. Sucks because i dont know until when i can run again :'(
Thanks, i wish i could play a little longer :( and just when im starting to get all my things for AX :(
I'm in.
Changed the spark plugs (oh my were they bad), wires, valve cover gasket (this looked good, just not sealed correctly, oh well), oil, tranny, shifter and diff fluids... I also cleaned the throttle body and EGR so maybe my P0402 will be a thing of the past. Only a touch of skin lost.
Tires are terrible and the suspension had a fat chick for a previous owner so I'm gunning for mid pack in "T" ;)
I put the old Evo brake rotors in the trunk with the used fluids to take them to Autozone and the car was pointed nose up the whole way!
You'll see just how well the 143,000 mile stock suspension holds up tomorrow ;)
Early day and fun course.
Frustrating. There is a two-second gap between myself and the PAX winner. I cannot imagine where I would have found two seconds out there in my car. I guess ABS going into the 180 and a little more power coming out would have helped. However, I hate to just blame the car. Or was the afternoon pavement just that much faster? Oh well, there is always the next event.
I had a blast. I really liked the course. Very fun day.
results already? wow most clubs takes days for it. Apparently i miss a fun day :'(
ken has logs too, but he just logs latitudinal slip angle.
Good news:
- The car made it home
- The car started back up (more on that in the bad news)
- The oil slick was just a torn valve cover gasket (that I just replaced last night!)
- The old gasket was still in the garage trash (and looked pretty good, so it went back on :))
- The transmission fluid leak looks to have been the drain bolt needed a bit more tightening
- I have lots of improvements to make so I won't be bored (it's like being in "N" all over again)
Bad news:
- the car died on the way home (thanks Danny for the company on the side of 121), threw P1345 (Cam Sensor, it looks like it got dinked a bit when changing the valve cover gasket yesterday, doh! $80 doh!)
- the car wouldn't start once I got home (sensor likely overheated)
- I still have no idea what tires I want to buy, but the "flinstones" as someone called them have to go

I too enjoyed the course quite a bit. I didn't expect to like the 2-way slalom as much as I did. Thanks to Danny and ER for letting me do a set-up work assignment so I could run-and-go! Baby mama wouldn't have given me a race pass otherwise. Can't believe I FINALLY finished in the Pax money at the one event I don't stay for trophies. Great event!
Looking at Ken's vid, I would have loved ABS going into that 180. Wow!
Good course! My problem was fighting my stupid, illegal de-powered steering rack. It just wasn't right for some reason. When I got home, I pulled it off and tore it down and made afew changes. Driving it on the street afterward, it felt better, but who knows how it will feel in the next race. Stupid rack! Stupid Autocross! Stupid home mechanic! ::Rant::
Fun track. Glad I got to work corner 1 in the first heat, so I would be less confused in the second. Am I correct that 7 street tire cars got paid? Watch your mirrors Jon and Mark. Unfortunately, gonna be a little more expensive weekend than planned. Any kind souls out there that could help me clean up some scratches on das auto? I would really appreciate it. Boys and girls out there learn from my stupid mistake.
What happened?
Popup canope blew over when I was working on track. I did not have enough weight on it and the weight I did have was probably not properly positioned. End result was a dent in the right quarter panel and a couple scratches. Ken came over and that calmed me down, so I was able to put it behind me for my runs. Like I told him, I would have felt ten times worse if it was his car that it hit.
It should all buff out and $50 at PDR will remove that dent.
The supercharged Datsun ran great for a few seconds. It sounded pretty cool too. It blew an intercooler coupling which was like a shotgun blast. I ran it without the supercharger for the rest of the runs. My first run was pretty quick at a 32.8 but I got a DNF for missing one cone in the second slalom. I can't help but wonder if I would have gotten a 32.8 on the remaining runs if the boost had been there. Probably not.
We had 116 entrants and were done by 1 PM. Almost everyone got 6 runs. Efficiency in action. Maybe next time we will take a 30 minute lunch break.
It was nice seeing the Corvairs there.
The next event on July 11th will be the FSAE spectacular. I love seeing all the FSAE cars.
So you're the one... :punchout: Sorry, but I think most of us find the FSAE cars to be a beating (kitty litter anyone?).
Looks like a great event by the folks at ER, and nice use of the limited space at Pennington. And I like seeing a Cayman out there in the hands of folks who really know how to set up and drive a car!
Goofy - glad to hear you minimized the drama, just be sure to change that damn 140k mile timing belt in the next 13 seconds. It's got to be down to guitar strings by now. I do have a manual steering rack I'll let go cheep if you or Mark (or anyone) want it. Not sure what plans you have for the car, OZ says you may want to stay in CS for awhile which is what I would do . In STR you can slap on 20 x 9's with 255 skins!
Kudos to Kaitlan for the course design, I think everyone liked it.
"But these go to eleven." - Spinal Tap
I think the timing belt has been changed. There's too much stuff that's new under the hood to have skipped that job. I visually inspected it (I know not good enough) and it looked pretty new. Not a lot of dust in there around it either.
I think I'm going to stay T-CS for the rest of the year. I'm not sold on STR just yet. Although I might buy suspension that F's me and puts me in STR anyway.
You're wrong Andy - we had 69 entrants including the Corvair club, not 116. True that we were done by 1pm, but if we would have given the people a well-deserved lunch break and 8 runs in 4 heats we would have finished by about 3:30 or 4. Plenty of time to make that job interview, the 'Lost' finale, a pedicure, etc.
Opinions?
Those things can be dangerous! Back in 2000 (i think) we had an event where a big windstorm came up and one of those awnings came loose and damaged 5 or 6 cars (including mine). The owner's homeowner policy covered the damage, thank heavens. So, be careful with those things!
