Emmision testing a OBD1 Miata

Got my '94 to move under its own power it seems to be running very well.

I filled it with gas and added a bottle of Techron, figure I'll run this tank of gas then go get it inspected. With a few freeway runs on this tank to get the exhaust system nice and toasty.

Any tips or suggestions on how to get this car to pass inspection the first time around??

Is timing on a 1.8 NA as critical as it was on my old '92 1.6? If it wasn't a 10 deg it would blow over on the hydrocarbons but if it was at 10 deg it would pass with flying colors!

I doubt you'll have any problems, but I'd leave it at 10 degrees just for a safety factor. At least you won't have to worry about all the OBDII readiness codes and such.

Never had a problem with the 94 passing. As long as it is not burning a lot of oil it should pass easily.

I've never had a problem at 14 degrees, until I started my conservation driving last year. Sunny failed for the first time last week, so I was forced to drive her hard to clean out the cob webs, and she passed. You might want to seafoam it, just as a precaution. That's my plan for my 95.......

OBD-I FTW!!! Just a sniffer up the tail pipe. Make sure all your lights work and your gas cap holds pressure.

Giggity.

I'd sea foam it first. Keep the timing stock and get the cat really hot right before you inspect it.

Make sure the wrench monkey knows its RWD when they strap it to their Dyno.

Plan to swipe the wheels off of Vivid's car if my new Azenis don't show up in a timely manner & brake pads are shipping today 2nd day air.

My emissions were nearly half the legal limit my last inspection.
That is on a 1.8 using the 1.6 computer and a 2 stage FM cat.

Sea-foam did nothing but make a huge amount of smoke. IMHO

I have a couple of sets of tires/wheels, stacked up, if you need.
We can swap them here easy.
Better than putting Vivid on stands.

You think running a tank of Techron infused gas in prior to inspection is a good plan since I'm not 100% sure how long this poor car sat "resting"??

Techron sure can't hurt anything. But if it seems to run fine and the exhaust doesn't stink when it's warmed up, then you're probably good to go.

Being that the 1st retest is free, I would take care of the brakes and tires and take it down and give it a try. No reason to jump through a bunch of hoops when you don't know if it is even needed. As an added bonus, it will look a lot better having that fail notice in your hand (that says you have 2 weeks to retest) when the cop pulls you over for expired inspection sticker. ::2Cents::

Pads are in route and hopefully so are the tires.

The brakes aren't terrible they are just not up to what one would expect on a Miata.

I'm not real worried about Johnny Law they would need to catch me first. ;)

Yes, my time is more valuable than a couple of little bottles that are only gonna help anyway.

Make sure you add Techron Concentrate, not injector cleaner crap.
Run that, then fill with good gas and RXP.
That works for me, but everyone has there snakeoil.

If it fails, drive it to MW Saturday and practice all day long then get it retested while it's SMOKIN' HOT!:burnrubr:
