Honduh Help

My niece just bought a 99 Accord with 165k last week. It runs great and seems to have been well maintained.

Except:

Everyday after work it is difficult to start. When she hits the starter, the engine tries to start, runs for a few seconds and dies. When she tries to restart it, the same thing happens. She says after a few tries like this, if she hits the gas as soon as the engine catches, the car revs normally and runs fine.

It starts fine in the mornings, and it starts fine after it is warmed up. For some reason, after work, it is no bueno.

Anyone have this experience with a Honda? What did you do to resolve it?

Just kidding. Fuel pump or fuel filter? If the engine runs for a little while then dies, it sounds like it might not be getting enough fuel. Maybe the filter is clogged. After work it's warmer than in the mornings, so the clogging gunk is thicker and therefore prevents enough fuel from getting through? This is pure speculation.

Well considering it has a few miles underr it's belt, I'd recomment the usual Seafoam and fuel filter. But I'm think you might have already thought of that.

It is strange that it does this warm or cold, but only after work. Does it sit on a slope at work?

Maybe a TPS? Beacuse you say if you give it gas it starts running OK.

Apparently, it sits on a bit of a slope and she plans to park facing the opposite way tomorrow.
What is a TPS? I've done nothing to the car yet.

Have her turn the key to "on" and wait 10 seconds before trying to start it. If that works then there may be a fuel leak or something else that is causing the fuel lines to be empty.

TPS might mean "throttle plate sticks". With so many miles, it very well might be sticking and killing the engine.

I'd run SeaFoam through the car, even if you figure out the problem. It does a high mileage car wonders. Boosted my mileage considerably, smoothed out idle, better throttle response.

I agree with Channelmaniac here. Hondas have return style fuel system and it maybe that the fuel is draining back into the tank during the day. I would try waiting a few seconds with the key on to make sure the fuel system has a chance to repressurize.

I asked her to try that, but I'm not sure if she did.

Like I said, she's supposed to park the car facing the other way today to see if that makes a difference - if she remembers.
