Do you remember?

Do you remember the first time you paid for gas for a car you were driving? Do you remember how much it cost per gallon?

I know, I'm ::OldMan::, but after paying $3.70 for super Sunday morning, I started thinking. IIRC, gas was around 10% of that when I started buying it around 4 decades ago ::Shocked:

I can certainly remember when it hit the dreaded $1.00.

I remember driving my mini-bike to the gas station. I had a quarter, filled it up and got change back. ::hal::

I believe it was around $1.25 a gallon when I started driving in 1989. I also recall it dipping under $1 for a few months in the late 90's.

Wow! 1966 was a long time ago......... I do remember a few things in 1969. I was in Wichita, KS, in the Air Force, and worked part time at a gas station. They were always have gas wars and I remember pumping it for $0.19. I also remember two hamburgers, fries, and a coke at McDonalds for $0.99.

I'm not as old as some of you, but I do remember freaking out when it went above $2 a gallon. I used to take two quarters up to the station to fill my moped up, and it would go for a couple of weeks on that. I'm thinking of getting another one, except this time in the form of a 250 Ninja.

I think it was slightly under 2 bucks when I started in 00? My memory sucks though.

Under a buck in 90' in Odessa, Texas. Diesel was still cheaper than and I had a Golf Diesel the first 6 months of driving.

I remember $0.85/gallon in the 90's. Less than $10 to fill up my Buick

$0.85 at Racetrac by my high school.

I have purchased gas at 0.25cents/gal. It was in 1954.

In 97-98 I think it was still under a dollar. Maybe .75 or .85 cents. Under 10 bucks to fill up a 78 Toyota Corrola.

Like MadMerv, I remember paying and selling regular gasoline for $0.19 per gallon in 1965-66 gas wars. More often, it was 21 to 23 cents per gallon.

But, your 409 Chevy with duel 4 barrel AFB's, may have gotten only 3 or 4 MPG due to your heavy right foot. After all, gas was less than a quarter per gallon.

I pumped gas at my grandparents convenience store in 1967 (yes, they really used to pump gas for you at the convenience stores) and the price was 23 cents per gallon. We also would clean the windshield, check the oil and when necessary, my grandfather would fixed flats.

When I got my DL in 1976, I believe gas was 50 cents per gallon and my 1968 Pontiac LeMans would drink alot of gas. Also, I believe my part-time job as a hospital orderly only paid $2.89 per hour.

I remember way back in two thousand and six anno domini before those tempests Rita and Katrina when gas was less than two dollars a gallon.

When I got my first car it was about $0.85/gal of regular. After I went in the Army, we could get super on post for about $0.95. I remeber paying that back in good old '98.

If you take into consideration I paid $3.75 for super on Saturday, the gas price has gone up 394% in the last decade.

or 75% in 2 years.

Did gas go up because of Rita and Katrina? Thought it was just China and India. I need to learn me some gas.

Assume for a moment that Exxon, as well as the other oil companies, could somehow ignore economic forces which determine a capitalist economy. What if the oil companies were able to operate as a sort of welfare-state charity and didn't make record profits for their shareholders but instead somehow applied every last dime of profit to reduce the price at the pump?::Banana::

At the time this article was written, your government had taxed the oil companies over 1.34 trillion dollars, more than twice the profits they earned. Government does not EARN anything, it makes no INVESTMENTS, it does not CREATE jobs, although it is pretty good at eliminating them.

Gas has been ever rising due to increase in demand with no apparent increase in daily/yearly supply.

China and India have been growing at double digit rates, both they can not sustain that kind of growth in the long run. Inflation is catching up to them.

There's nothing wrong with record profits. Every time any business, whether it be Exxon or the taqueria down the street exceeds previous earnings, then it has a record profit. If not for record taxation, there would be more record profits for everyone. For reasons completely foreign to me however, there are people out there who think record profits are a bad thing, and that they should be punished for that accomplishment.:confused: Part of where we are headed as a society, I guess.

I pump gas at 19.9 during a gas war when I was in High School and we weere not the cheapest station!

IMO Rita and Katrina pushed the 3 dollar mark and showed the oil companies that they could get that price. Now they are sustaining it even higher and hence their profits. India and China are probably not paying 3 dollar a gallon but are paying whatever their economy can sustain. BTW, adjusting for inflation, our gas is now higher than it's ever been at 3.50 average nationally.

Guess I should have gotten a job at an oil company and not UPS.

I know its fun to hate on the oil companies, but nobody looks at the percent of profit. Sure they made a few billion dollars but their expenses are pretty damn high as well. Microsoft to Best Buy had higher percent profits. Then you have so much burecratic tape keeping their hands tied from doing more to lower costs.

Well lets see... $101 for 25 gallons is $4.04 a gallon, but the sign pictures says 4.09 9/10.

Then there is the comment that he is filling up every 200 miles and getting 10 miles per gallon. That would be a 20 gallon fillup, which is a ways from the $100 fillup the article highlights, and much less than the 25 gallons he just said he got.

I should have said errors. 25 gallons in what should be a 20 gallon tank is one of them. Anybody with any knowledge of accounting who has ever received a paycheck should catch the other one.::BaHump::
