I’m looking at the ACT 1.8 Stage 1 Organic Clutch or Spec Performance 1.8 Stage 1 Clutch from TDR. My thinking is; if I’m going to buy, I may as well upgrade a little. I would appreciate any feedback from anyone who uses ether of these, or make another suggestion. I want to order it within a day or two. Also lighter flywheel? I know it revs a little quicker, but I’ve been told it decreases torque? A little help please. It’s time to play with my toy a little! :drive:
Get a hold of Rogue unless you plan on DIY'ing it.
Rogue definitely came to mind, he did some work on my toy before.
I have had the 1.6 ACT Stage 1 in for over 4 years and have been VERY happy with it.
spec. I'm going with an ebay metal disc, pressure plate, and oem throw out on my next one though. Gary recommended the spec s3 that I currently have and I'm very happy with it for a track car.
I installed my 1.6 ACT "Stage 1" (HD disc and PP I think) last month. The pedal is considerably less stiff after about a month of driving, not that I had a problem with how stiff it was before.
I also put on a lightened stock flywheel. IIRC it's ~11 lbs. I don't think it is too light for the street, and it does rev quicker for under $100.

If you plan on replacing the flywheel anyway, you should consider getting 1.6 parts. The stage 1 and stage 2 kits from many after market suppliers are enough to handle stock 1.8 engines. Research the torque specs before you buy. A stock 1.6 flywheel is lighter than your 1.8 flywheel, and a lightened 1.6 flywheel is in another world.
im in the middle of installing similar parts and will finish today. well see how it drives...
I ran a 1.6 Fly behind my 1.8 for a long time and was well pleased with it.
Thanks for the suggestions...I pulled the trigger on the Spec Performance 1.8 Stage 1. Now still working on the Flywheel. What does IIRC stand for? I'm a little slow at times:rolleyes:

For a long time I wondered what IIRC meant! I came to the conclusion it stood for: It Isn't Really Complicated since it usually preceded instructions.

Rogue put it in this weekend, I picked it up a couple hours ago.
I went with the Spec Performance 1.8 Stage 1 from Gary at Track Dog Racing and a lightened steel, flywheel, (13.45lbs) from Flying Miata. Gary had the transmission seal and gasket kit, and the small and large shifter boots. Fill up everything with Red Line products and she is smooth as silk!
The clutch is smoother than it's ever been, it actually feels lighter even though I thought it would be a little stiffer, that let's me know what condition it was in. I did not want to go “crazy light” on the flywheel and I think this one was a good choice, the motor feels lighter, and if it's not my imagination, the idle is a bit higher, helping with the “idol droop” it has been known for. After running it around for an hour, there was no noticeable noise on deceleration and it grabs nice on acceleration! The thing I had not expected? Changing the shifter boots, it's amazing what putting some oil into a completely dry turret will do! (Did you know that shifter boots and consoles are not supposed to be hot. What a concept)
With only an hour on it, it feels great, I'll give an update in a couple weeks.

I love reading the stories on Miata.net about the guys with 6-speeds that pour quart after quart into the turret before they realize that something might not be right with the instructions in the garage. :DQuote:
