I just changed the oil on my NA for the first time since I owned it/ got it out of storage (I used mobil1) how do you guys get those filters off ? It must have taken me a good 5 minutes to get my hand onto that filter . Is there an easier way than trying to go from the top between the fender, and intake manifold ? I could barley fit my arm in there to reach that filter. What method do you guys use ?
Remove front right tire. Go in thru there.

joking aside the first time is all ways a bitch seeing as every oil change place over torques the oil filter on with a tool.

I dunno my arm will fit between all the fender and the intake. It's tight and if the car is really hot it'll burn my arm a bit but I can reach it fairly easily.

Remove the bulky aluminum bracket right in front of said oil filter - it runs from intake to the side of the block. Three bolts and it's off... BAM! Lots of room to get to it from the top. Also a must if you ever have to monkey with the alternator. As far as I know, it doesn't do a damn thing but get in your way. If you want to put it back on, it's as easy as removal. Still takes less time than jacks, stands, and pulling the wheel, etc etc etc.
Anyone else running bracket-free?

Also, there's a longer oil filter that will work with our cars. I think it's for a 626 (perhaps the FE motor?).

'90 is bracket-free. Need to look into that for the '94, which already has more wiring & whatnot in the way. Bleh...
Have read a bit here & there about that brace but nothing conclusive. Most conjecture has it there to deal with harmonics and to keep things from breaking apart at higher revs for extended periods.
Maybe worth seeing if Emilio mentions the brace in reference to the many instances of his throttle body coming apart...
Bracket free here, and have been for well over 4 abusive years at the track. No problems to IM or throttle body. Of course, I'm not running raised rev limits either.

The K&N brand has a 17mm bolt head made into the outer oil filter case. Stick a socket on it or extension or openend or boxend
and you casn loosen it easily. Then when installing go with as tight as you can by hand or 1/2 turn past gasket touching.
Then 4gtabwtit.

I go about a 1/2 turn on all of my oil filters. Never had one leak and it's easy to get them off at the next oil change.
