Sometime last night the little buck-toothed bastard snuck a Little Debbie off the kitchen counter, tore into it like a ravenous fool, then pooped everywhere. Maybe I really did hear rave music last night...
Since my dog was no help (or maybe an accomplice), I guess I'll have to resort to a mouse trap... or maybe a cat.
Any suggestions? D-Con vs Mouse Trap?
Mouse trap + peanut butter (where the dog can't get to it!)
I seem to get them in the garage and shop each time this year. I spotted one in the shop last week. I put out both dcon and those sticky tubes that smell like peanut butter. I have only caught 1 in the tubes before, but they seem to be great at catching all types of other critters (spiders, crickets, etc) so I keep putting them out.
The sticky tubes, mats, and boxes suck. Great for catching mice, but you also get the enjoyment of finding two or three fiesty live rats that you then have to kill before desposing of, and they don't always stay on the sticky mat for long while you're trying to figure out what to do with them. I had one tough little bastard fight his way off that mat while I was trying to shove it in a bag. I didn't want to get anywhere near him and was glad he cleared my arm and shoulder when he finally freed himself and jumped. **shudders**
Advise from my brother in law who works as an exterminator, the cheap wooden snap traps at walmart are the way to go. They die right there, not in your walls later as with poison. Just get the big ones, for the same reason as above, pretty much guaranteed to get the job done. i've even got two in one trap before. ::EvilBanaI have a picture of it somewhere.
Peanut butter folded up in a piece of napkin(something for them to pull on) or a slim jim works great. I used to live in rat city, otherwise known as south/west Irving apartments...can you tell?

I use wooden traps, usually rat sized, but have some mouse sized ones too. Poison has made the walls stink for several days. I hate that smell. A cat never hurts.

Wooden spring traps for sure! I hated hearing the things fall into the walls at our old house in McKinney and wondering how long the smell would last. Just be glad you don't have tree rats - things are the size of cats (no joke!)
I had a tree rat get into my house in CA. The trap broke his back legs but didn't kill it. I was at the store, and my now Ex had to put a pot over it until I got home. Lifted the pot and was blown away at how fast a rat could travel with only 2 working legs. Thing was a solid 8-12 inches long, and the tail was just as long, if not longer than the body.Quote:

That's what dad called 'em when I was a kid. Not a squirrel (as most people call them), and not a Nutria. These things look just like rats, but are huge. We had to nail the big traps to the fence, just so they didn't carry them off; and then finish the kill off with the .22 or brick. :)

I like the looks of the Tip-Trap. If I snag something, I'd rather not give Molly a chance to play with it before I can get to it. Looks like that would do the trick. I'm headed back to the Mesquite Ace Hardware/Feed Store/Donk Repair Shop after work...

I went back to the Mesquite Donk Repair Shop and picked up a couple of giant old-school wood 'n' wire rat traps - big enough to snap a bobcat's neck. Outside of glue traps, that's all the old place had. On my way home I started imagining how my dog would either A) find the dead rodent before I could dispose of it and play "squeaky toy" with it, or B) find the peanut butter laden trap before the live rodent, leading to an unpleasant visit to the 24-hr vet.
With that in mind, I stopped by Lowes and found something similar to Rogue's Tip-Trap. If it caught the mouse, he would be contained and unavailable for play. If Molly found the trap, at least it wouldn't snap her tongue off. I figured she wouldn't even mess with it since the peanut butter was jammed way up at the back end of the thing. Well, I figured wrong. At 4:02 this morning, I awoke to a clattering racket and the sound of claws and paws skidding around on the wood floor. My hope was that the trap had snagged its mark and Molly was jumping up to investigate. No so much. She was up getting a drink of water when she must've caught the faint whiff of peanut butter. When she went to investigate/sniff/lick, the trap snapped shut and scared the shit out of her. She hauled ass back to the sofa and already had her "who me?" look when I saw her.
Long story short... the mouse is still on the lam.
I may go out with a pillowcase and try to snatch the neighborhood tom cat for mouse duty.
I, uh, think I found out where they're getting in behind the dishwasher...
