To ensure the cars go around corners as they should, a number of key components were added, key among them being MAZDASPEED coil overs, Racing Beat hollow front and rear anti-roll bars, MAZDASPEED shock tower brace, Power Slot slotted brake rotors, StopTech DOT-compliant stainless steel brake lines and street performance brake pads, as well as SpeedSource front brake ducts.

If one wanted to re-produce it, much of the stuff added is available off the shelf, including all of the performance stuff. Any good upholstery shop could make the seats, the rollbar would be nothing special for the guys around town that build cages, and I suspect that most body men would find retrofitting the NA door latches a piece of cake. The fender flares would likely be the hardest part.

Very nice, they just need to lose the oddball 16in wheels for some 15s or 17 x 9s.

For the autocross guys, if Mazda makes it, I would guess A stock (they need cars), If someone else made one it's super street mod. (say hello to the 3 rotor turbo RX7).

I like it alot. But it has too much bar. That's why it doesn't have a soft top, no room.

Based on all that this car has, Mazda would likely have to ask a bunch for it. For those that say that would sign up for one today, would you do so if it was priced in the mid-30s?

Try 40. No way it would be mid thirties.

With that spec? I'd pay $35k for it. With 230whp and 2500 pounds, it's got more performance/dollar than an S2k CR, which retailed for about the same price (and was another softtop delete special model of a 2 seat convertible).

I think low to mid 30s is reasonable. You have to consider that the cost of a factory build will be much less than if you did it yourself. Yes it comes with a hardtop, but they have deleted the softtop, so the net cost increase for them is very small. Ditto for the wheels, suspension bits, interior, etc. Parts from aftermarket firms like Cosworth would also cost MUCH less than what you see on the retail market because of volume discounts and the marketing value to Cosworth (Selling 2000 kits to Mazda would generate 1000s of retail kit sales for them). The MSM came in with an MSRP of $25k.

Plus this comes with a warranty from Mazda.

I agree with the above posts, however, currently a GT PRHT fully loaded is north of 30 already. Moot point anyway as it likely won't go into production.

Knowing Mazda's history. They would most likely delete the ABS and call it a weight savings benefit. Seems like I have read the Road Race guys blow the stock transmissions with the stock motor.

So many people claim they'd order one, but isn't that what happened with the MSM? Dealer's couldn't move them? Seems that everyone says they want one when they aren't available, and if they are available, everyone claims they can build the same thing for $10K less. Neither one seems to happen, unfortunately.

All that aside, it is very sweet, and I'm tempted to steal some ideas.

I read that the performance of the rotary was disappointing in the RX-8. Was it a case of it was just the wrong car for the engine and that it would be perfect for something like the Miata?

I would think that a "returning to the roots of the Miata" would not mean a seriously performance-oriented (i.e., fast) engine.

Depends on what you define as “disappointing”. I’m quite happy with the engine in mine, and the RX-8 is still faster than any production Miata ever has been. However, in an era where even minivans have 300 horsepower, the Renesis could use a little more pep, especially in a 2900 pound car.

I think a 232 hp, 9k rpm redline engine would be awesome in a Miata chassis, but Mazda is never going to make a rotary Miata/MX-5 so it doesn’t really matter.

I test drove the RX-8 and the MSM at the same time. The RX-8 pushes you back in the seat on launch more than the MSM did. If they had made a convertable model RX-8 I would have bought it in a heartbeat. I still might trade mine for an RX-8 one of these days.
