I happen to have a bunch of OEMs for the Miata. For the other cars, it is whatever name brand is on sale at Autozone.
I am pretty sure at least one person will pipe up about how Fram is bad to use. You know those guys at Fram, still doing their best to ruin engines after all these years.
I also just buy quantities of OEM filter from Mazda Motorsports on the cheap.
Someone said something about the Mazda filters have some valve in them... yada yada yada... helps on colds starts... Does that mean anything to anyone?

Next point to discuss: using larger filters than the one specified by the parts counter. I have a filter relocation kit with the filter located up by the passenger headlight. The filter is oriented opening down. I should have room for a filter that is longer than the standard one. Anyone use a bigger filter?
i use the purolator filters for the 1995 626 (same year as my miata) .. a little taller body than the miata spec filter so it has a little more filter area and still easy to get on and off. i understand the fram feelings, there are enough images of that on the internet
I typically use Puralator Pure One filters in my cars as I had read good things about them, but OEM is good as well. I also opt for the slightly larger Honda filter that fits our cars. Can't remember the part number but I found it on the pointy board. Bigger is better right?
Bigger has more surface area, so I'm thinking it's got to be better. Also adds volume, every little bit helps...
Napa Gold.
Purolator Gold... I got a deal on Amazon a while back. Plus, they have a grippy surface that makes them easy to twist off.
Wix/Napa Gold(same thing)
WIX filters here.
