The A/C condenser fan at the Palatial POS Palace is screaming like a fiend tonight.....
I know what I am doing in the morning.
Anyone on the West-side know where one could find a condenser fan??
I know of a place on 820 and Highway 10 but can't think of the name of the joint.
Tristan tells me 121 and Minnis, and go North. Lots of A/C supply houses there. In hatom city there are a bunch. Tristan is an AC guy, ask him. My neighbors fan was making HORRIBLE noises and Tristan walked me through how to take it apart and where to get parts. My neighbor got a new one for $50.

Capacitors are cheap and easy to replace, and are probably the #1 failure point of home AC units. If yours are old, it might not be a bad idea. Last year our upstairs unit went out, and I paid the guy $250 to watch him replace the capacitor. This year, the downstairs unit went out. I spent $30 on a capacitor online and replaced it myself in 10 minutes. For those 3 days that I waited for the capacitor to arrive, I kept thinking to myself that if I had replaced the second one as a preventative measure right after the first one went out, I would not be sweating as I wait for brown Santa. Plus, POS can always go live with Sammmy and enjoy the pool while they wait for the capacitor to arrive. That's my plan, at least.
Capacitors are readily available at the a/c parts houses in haltom city right by our house. Mine went out a few years back and a new one was like $20

I would say that if the capacitor looks like a coke can that was left in the freezer, replace now. If it shows no signs of bulging when compared to the replacement, then save the replacement to have on hand when it is needed.Quote:

How old are everyone's AC units that you're all suggesting to pick up a spare capacitor? I ask because right before we left for our honeymoon last month I had to pull and clean my contactor...which I've never had to do before (admittedly, I've only had one other house that had central AC, but I never had an issue with the system at all). There hasn't been an issue with it since, and it still looks clean as can be now, but I was planning on picking up a spare contactor, should I grab a capacitor too? I looked at it when I reinstalled the contactor, and it wasn't bulging or otherwise bad looking.
The house was finished being built in very early 2006, so it's not "old" in my opinion. But like I said, this is the first real run-in with central AC that I've had, so 6 years could be ancient for all I know. And up until last month, I hardly ever turned it on since we've lived here.
My house is 9 years old and has 2 Trane units (The original owners payed extra to upgrade to the Tranes). The first one's capacitor lasted 8 years and the second 9 years. I spoke with my neighbor recently about it and he has a single unit of a less expensive brand. He had to replace his capacitor at the 7 year mark. Both mine and my neighbors are cranking 24/7 in the hot months as we both work from home.
I don't recall the brand I have, but pretty sure it's not Trane. Up until last month I worked from home too, but my office stays Africa-hot no matter what the AC is set to, so I just left it off till the wifey got home. But by then it'd be cool enough to just open the door/windows. Now I have no job, and she is home from school more, so we've been using the AC nonstop. Sounds like picking up a spare capacitor is probably a good idea at this point. Thanks.
New fan installed and everything is working as per spec.
The 18 year old capacitor in my Trane looked just fine (not swelling). Ran out of daylight so I'll look at it again later. I also need to give the outside unit its good yearly cleaning.
We replaced both of our units last year. The cheap ass builder grade ac units that were put in when we had the house built laste 5 years before they started giving us trouble. We managed to get them to last 10 years total but they were worn out.
We installed high end Lennox multistage compressors with mutistage heater/blower units. Last summer our eletric bills were 2/3 what they were in previous years. Plus even with 105 degree temps outside they will maintain the house at 70 degrees. Before we were lucky to get below 80 in the heat of the day with the Ac units blowing full blast.
If we ever have another house built I will pay the extra for high end units up front.
I installed a new unit in 05....the capacitor failed last year. It was swollen so slightly it was barely noticeable.
