I've got a clunk I can't find. Doesn't seems to be suspension or steering related. I checked and lubed the caliper pins, and greased up the sway bar bushings too. No sign of oil on the shock, but it is original (1996 vintage). I pushed up and down on that corner and can't reproduce the noise. No play in the tire/wheel either.
Any ideas?
Not sure if it's applicable to this platform, but any chance the upper shock mounts are toast?
You mean the bumpstops? It even does it going slowly in reverse.
This is why before you just go off on a whim and buy a 18 year old car that you get it thoroughly looked at by a mechanic before you buy it....

I never heard a clunk when I drove it Saturday.
Broken exhaust hangers or something exhaust related? Doh!! nevermind... you said right front ;)
Something making contact with the driveshaft or halfshafts? Loose bolt on the u-joint? Baby wildebeest in the jack well?
I heard it when I got it home and was backing it in the driveway. Maybe a loose alignment bolt? Didn't check those yet.Quote:

I had the same thing in the 90 I had. I believe mine was brake related. Only happened at slow speed.
Pulled the RF shock and re-torqued everything under a load. Didn't see or feel anything obvious, but noise is still there.
It's more pronounced with the steering wheel turned...does it in forward and reverse. I guess it's more of a loud popping/clicking than a clunk.
Maybe an odd bearing failure, like one got free of the race? I'm assuming you've already checked the brake pad retainer springs, since they likely got removed at some point in the shock removal? Broken slider pin?
Brake hardware all there and I cleaned and lubed the slider pins.
Some people just refuse to be helped. :)
OK, a long shot, but how about something inside the tire?
Long Bolt? Swaybar mount or loose endlink?
Removed long bolt to pull the shock and retorqued to spec. Torqued swaybar mounts and end links too.Quote:

I never really resolved the issue. It only happened at slow speed, turning and braking at the same time. It pretty much only happened while turning down my alley. The clunk sound only occurred while lightly braking to make the turn. Never happened any other time.
So what are the conditions when you are hearing the clunk again??
I once had a mysterious clunk in the right front that I could NOT figure out. Turned out to be a loose lug nut on the right rear...
I had this problem in my Civic. It was the upper A-arm bushings. Check your bushings and balls.
These might help too.

Is it just a single clunk or more a clunk, clunk, clunk? I had that when I backed into my driveway. Siren for the alarm would swing enough to bump the fender.
^Clunk, clunk, clunk. It almost sounds like something is rubbing or 'catching' but I can't find it.
We just had a car in the shop with a clunk in the rear in first gear. It turned out to be a loose alignment bolt. I stuck a pry bar in between each control arm and the sub frame and one made a clunk. Tightened bolt, problem gone.
Does the noise change with speed?
^I gorilla tightened the alignments bolts yesterday when I had the shock out. The noise does seem to coincide with the wheel rolling speed.
Try swapping tires to make sure it isn't in the wheel and tire.
Check your caliper bracket bolts.
Confirm the brake line isn't rubbing.
Since it seems to occur on left turns at low speed and changes with speed, I'm going to suggest a new front left hub/bearing but If you do swap the front hub, make sure you specify ABS or No ABS. We carry them. I'm out of non-ABS but have some on order.
Sounds like it is just about time to chock it up to experience, sell it to Steve, and move on.
Have a spare GoPro or some other small video device you don't care about it getting dirty? Strap it securely and go for a short ride. Perhaps you'll be able to see something.
