Like that's a surprise, right? :rolleyes:

I was changing the oil and doing a few other things on the RX-8 this afternoon. I pulled the drain plug, replaced the filter, then went off to do something else while I was waiting for the pan to drain completely.

I came back and started to fill the car with fresh oil... and I managed to pour about a 1/2 gallon in before I remembered I hadn't put the drain plug back in. :punchout:

Thankfully I had enough extra oil on hand to fill the car after I put the plug back in.

Anyway, have a laugh on me today. I did. :mrgreen:

The sad things is this will only slightly increase your oil consumption over normal driving.

First thing I did when I got my Miata back in December was to change the oil. I drained the pan and carefully measured out 3.6 quarts. Somewhere during the awkward oil filter removal and the subsequent mess it makes on the engine shield below, I got out of my usual routine.
So while I'm happily adding my 3.6 quarts I happen to notice a spreading oil slick creeping down my driveway (my driveway is on a slope, so it spreads better).

Rushing around looking for kitty litter, I can't find wherever it is my wife has it stored away. So I grab the cat box and dump the whole thing on my spreading oil slick, cat turds and all.

Now I've got my very own bag of cat litter in the garage.

Reminds me of the first time I did an oil change on my truck... I bought one of the oil pan/container things that said it could hold 15 quarts of oil, not realizing that the hole in to the pan was the size of a #2 pencil while the drain hole in the truck was about 3/4" diameter. Needless to say, all the dirty oil didn't get in to the container and most of it wound up on my driveway. I couldn't get out from under the truck quick enough to get a bucket. I had to build some dams out of kitty litter to contain my mini Exxon Valdez. 11 quarts of oil is a lot to get soaked up and disposed of.

Thanks for sharing that, now I dont feel so bad about some of the things I have done.
I will bet though that you never do that again, those kind of mistakes seem to linger in your mind for the rest of your life.....so really you have got it out of your way now and don't have to worry about making that mistake again.

My turn. I noticed a rubbing sound coming from the back wheels when I pulled in to the parking lot at work this morning. I got home today, jacked the car up to pull the rear wheels and investigate. I got the car up in the air and the lugs were probably less than finger tight. It seems I forgot to torque the lugs after I swapped my race tires for my street tires. I put them on with my 'heavy duty' 7.2V cordless drill which is probably good for 5 or 10 lbs. of torque tops. doh! :rolleyes:

Been there, done that, twice...::fool:: but I have an 18v impact wrench. Still not good.

So does it count if the error involved the loose nut behind the wheel?

I just hope the car behind me at the light was piloted by a cyclist who could at least enjoy the comic nature of my dismount... Tip... If you decide you want to unclip by swinging your heel INSIDE, make very sure that you don't then wedge your heel between the rear tire and frame... Amazingly, I did NOT technically fall. My left foot instinctively unclipped, but I very nearly did a split when my cleat hit the slicker paving in the middle of the lane... And thus the lovely tattoo...

The funniest part was realizing that there was NOT a convertible full of inebriated cheerleaders, so I was NOT going to impact the pavement... The least funny part was the perceived 6 minutes it took between knowing Something Bad™ was about to happen and regaining composure...

Two traffic lights later, though, I did get a compliment on the cool tattoo... Wasn't feeling brave enough to turn and look to see if they were being sarcastic... Just assumed they were...
