Suzan and I have signed up for a CHL class. We already have decided on a Walther PPK .380 for her but I am still researching. She has fired the .380 several times and feels comfortable with being able to finish some scumbag's life on this planet with it if she needs too. I didn't like the .380 but I don't want a .357 or 9mm, just something with enough power to complete the job so to speak......:D
I'm a big fan of glocks... A .380 is better than nothing at all, but 9mm is much more effective, and not much harder to handle.
I'd be interested in going with someone to a shooting range as I have never fired a gun at all. I grew up in a family that just didn't own guns.
I've considered get a CHL as there are way to many nuts out there. The Virginia Tech atrocity makes you think....
Not yet, but contemplating it.
I'm considering the Kahr Arms .40 S&W - very compact, easy to conceil and has good stopping power without going through as many walls as the higher velocity 9mm. ;)

No. If you want a really small, easy to conceal 9, Kahr is probably your best choice (although I broke the only one I've ever fired... covered, of course, by the manufacturers warranty, but I'm not sure that makes me feel better, even though it was a demo gun with no telling how many rounds through it). A Kel-tec PF9 is an excellent, and affordable choice. Highly concealable. Possibly a nicer trigger than the more expensive Kahr. Good reliability once you've run a few hundred rounds through it and sent it back to Kel-tec for a tune up (no charge, just inconvenient).Quote:

When considering a weapon for personal protection, you have to look at the balance between effectiveness and praticality. Considering that concealment is required, the biggest thing you can cart around on a daily basis would be a full size "service" handgun. More practical for most people is a compact or sub-compact - shorter barrel, shorter grip.
For home defense in suburbia, a pump action shotgun is arguably the best choice. With an 18" barrel and some practice, it's easy enough to handle within the confines of the average home. Adding the weight of a quality flashlight to the barrel doesn't make it feel much different. And on the list of universally recognizeable sounds? Take a guess what #2 is... (#1 is laughter). With the shotgun, you can choose a round that isn't likely to penetrate the exterior walls of your home - possibly even dividing walls in an apartment, although even #9 shot will have some penetration if there are only 2 layers of 1/2 inch sheetrock.

I can see why they call that an Alaskan. That's a last ditch way to protect yourself when the grizzly bear has you on the ground, munching away.

So long as your holster fully covers the trigger guard, your Glock is just as safe as anything else tucked inside your pants. The trigger isn't going to pull itself. If you're insane and like to carry Mexican, a Springfield XD is a better choice since it has a grip safety.
Oh, yeah... And next time I've got the extra cash lying about, I'll probably supplant my Glock 19 with a 19C. I've now put enough rounds through the C's to know that even in low light I reacquire the sights about .05 quicker with the C - faster than that when there's more light and muzzle flash is less of an issue.
I've got my license shortly after they first became available, so almost 10 years now. I've carried a variety of handguns and am still looking for the perfect carry weapon ;) .
Currently I carry a Springfield XD9 subcompact. Its 9mm, about the same size a Glock 26 (only about 1/4 inch taller) and holds 13+1 rounds (3 more than the Glock). It has a backstrap 'safety' and was about $100 cheaper than the Glock. So far the closest to 'perfect' I've found. Of course, they came out with the P99 compact after I bought it...
The Walther PPK and PPK/s are good guns, but I would not recommend them for carry (and I did carry one for a while). First off, they sometimes don't like hollow points, and if you're carrying a .380, you better be using hollow points. Now, this isn't all of them (my PPK/s had no problems), but it is a well known issue. Mostly, my biggest issue with the PPK for carry is that the frame is steel, not alloy or polymer. This makes it very heavy for its size. In fact unloaded, my full size Walther P99 weighs less than the PPK/s. If your wife really wants a .380, look into the Sig 230 or 232. More reliable and a lot less weight. And trust me, every ounce you can save really makes a difference when you're lugging one around, especially in summer!
I would seriously consider the Springfield XD9 subcompact, the Walther P99 compact or even (I can't believe I'm going to type this...) a Glock 26. Modern handguns have come a long way since the PPK was first developed in the late 1930's. You can get a 9mm that is lighter, has more rounds, more stopping power and is easier and less punishing to shoot, all in a package that is very similar size-wise. Heck, if you want to try out the Springfield, let me know and I'll meet you at a range sometime. ::2Guns:: And as far as my wife, she does ok with the PPK/s, the Springfield and even the AR-15. But her favorite to shoot is the Sig 229 in .357!! Personally, I think she just likes the noise it makes... ;)

That S&W 500 will cost about 2.75-3.00 per round to shoot so you better make em count, I was considering one of those.
I had breifly a Springfield XD 45 cal that was real nice, it was the 4 inch version with a 13 round capacity I had target rounds and Hollow Points with Stingers for home protection rounds.
It was a really nice gun except the slide button was stiff as hell, but you get used to it quick.
I have a Winchester Deffender shotgun that will shoot 3 inch magnums with an 18in barrel that holds 7, 3in rounds of 00 buchshot. (home protection)
Apparently, .45s are on a lot of want lists! :D
