Pummeled by Beer Bottles

While heading south on 35w in the slow lane, a clapped out primered Civic flies up behind me.
Thinking they want to race because they're tailgateing, I let off to encourage them to go on by.
They do pass me, then whip in front of me and start dropping beer bottles totally unprovoked.
After being showered by glass, I accelerate up beside them to ask WTF, and they hit my door with another bottle. (Nice Dent ::Rant::)
I started to dial 911, but couldn't hear so i hung up.
Really pissed, I had a lapse of judgement and hum a small jar of homemade jelly. (perfect strike) on the interior.
911 calls be back so I slowed to hear.
The Honda makes another pass and hit me in the shoulder with another bottle.
I had the power to out run them, but it was 4 out of control hispanics.
I figured this could only get worse so I doubled back.

Anyone else have problems with "Road Rage" in their Miata?
Is it the HD Deuce and Enthusa? (Barbara has neither, and has had problems)
What's the "smart" thing you can do about something like this?

I have HD Deuce and noisy exhaust, but I have never experienced road rage in the Miata. Ironically, I have experienced it while driving my wife's Murano. In that case, I too had let off the gas when some kids in a 90's Pontiac boat were tailgating. They took this as an act of aggression on my part and responded by trying to run me off the road, then they got in front of me and brake checked me repeatedly. :rolleyes:

I've had road rage once or twice in the Miata but usually fall back or out run them. I did have one crazy dude try to follow me home but I skipped my street and drove around till I lost him.

I don't think the mods had anything to do with it. You came upon some drunk assholes with small dicks who saw a cool car and decided to take out their aggression on you. Seems like a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. :(

Sorry to hear that Stevan. That's scary, what if they had hit your head and not your shoulder. The worst i've gotten was a redneck yelling, Zoom Zoom, Yeah right. Glad it wasn't worse, and you didn't have your gun.

Once, over a decade ago, now I just stop on the side of the road (CCW permit & all). No one's ever stopped when I've done that.

I'm also very careful to not piss anyone off, there are some crazy sob's out there.

I'm sorry to hear that. I'd be pissed too! I'm glad you're OK and that it didn't get worse for you.

Did you get a plate # or anything? That sucks.

Not in a Miata, but about 15 years ago, I had a guy in his macho jacked up pickup try to pass me on the shoulder right before a hill 121 and what would be Coit(back when it was a two lane highway). I quickly moved over so that he would'nt pass and he honked and gave me the bird before passing on the left. At the stop light, he proceeded to jump out of his truck and threaten to kill me should I do that again. All the time, I had turned the stearing wheel toward him and had my foot on the clutch with the truck in first gear. Too bad cell phones were a business need or an expensive luxury at the time.

Sorry to hear about your experience. It's no fun, for sure.

That was my original plan but I figured I'd try the jelly first.

I'm sorry, but they wouldn't have gotten more than one bottle thrown towards my car. I tend to snap very easily in situations like that (I know, I need to work on it, you really wouldn't expect it out of a sweet guy like me ;)). I'm afraid I would have damaged my car knocking them into the nearest ditch.

Dang, I'm gonna start carrying a shotgun in the car after that story (till I get my license).

Yep, I had a guy in a huge truck get pissed after he started to change lanes into me. I didn't even honk or throw a hand up, I just gave a little gas to shoot ahead as I was passing him on the right anyways...on 1st and Broadway in Garland. So the guy honks, flashes his lights, gives the finger then pretends to ram me! I didn't want to screw with this guy, especially since I was on my way to the gun range, so at the last possible moment I make a sliding hard right into a neighborhood to loose him. Well he spins the truck sideways to follow and eventually I hit a dead end. The maniac jumps out and starts for my car...man you should've seen the look on that rednecks face when I jumped out with the Uzi! Not what he was expecting from a kid in a "girly" car.

Driving situations, I snap quickly, but I still react calmly even though boiling inside. I've never actually gone after somebody, but nobody has ever obviously tried to hurt me or my passengers (and that's the only reason). If someone is after me with the intent to harm, I'm not going to take it lying down.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I snap on the inside and get very annoyed when somebody has their little road rage moments, but unless they're trying to do something to me deliberately, I'm not going to retaliate. And even then only if it's serious (I'm not going to key their car if they cut in front of me, for example. I have a LOT of out ward patience ;)). Believe me, I've been in a couple of serious situations at my job and I'm the only person who wasn't shaking like a leaf :neutral:

Well... myself and this old Indian woman who used to be a supervisor. But she was mean and could probably conjure spirits to after you ::EvilBana

I guess I should have worded that a bit more carefully. I've always had one of the longest fuses I know of until someone threatens me ;)

Being a recovering road rager it's hard to say what I would have done.
but my stuff was always from people provoking me. I never went after someone for no reason like these guys came after you.

I think you probably did the right thing, they were obviously riding in a piece of crap and didnt care about what you did to it, and were really wanting you to pull over for a 4 on 1 fight, the jelly is classic! too bad it wasnt gorilla glue...haha

"Throwing salsa" made me laugh. .

Back in January, I was running my oklahoma delivery route for my friend. I was just south of OKC city on I-35. Construction necessitated that the far left lane merge into the middle lane. I was 2 miles from the merge. There was a dump truck semi in front of me. As he moved into the middle lane, I continued in the left lane. I got even with his front axle on his trailer, when he looked into his sideview mirror at me and swirved back into my lane. I locked the brakes up, the ABS kicked in and I swirved into the shoulder. I was INCHES from the concrete barrier. I was back behind him and began to move to the middle lane. He did it again, except this time he swerved into the middle lane. At this point I backed way off, as I didn't know what he was going to do next, nor did i know why he was trying to inflict damage upon me/my friends van. I got up the road past the merge and was side by side with him. When I looked over at him, he had a huge grin. When I took my exit, I couldn't keep my hands still from the adrenaline rush and the high blood pressure from my anger.
If I would have had a gun, (God forbid) he wouldn't have had any tires left.

I had a road rage problem in my RX-7 one time. This guy runs straight through the intersection in a right turn only lane, and nearly sideswipes me as I'm legitimately changing lanes from middle to right AFTER the intersection. Anyhow, he was PISSED and started yelling at me so loud that I could hear him yakking through my rolled up passenger window. I laughed at him and gave him the finger (lapse in judgment), whereupon his eyes LIT UP in a whole new level of pissitude. He got so pissed off at me that he proceeded to chunk his newly opened Miller High Life tall boy at my car, hitting just behind the passenger window and spraying beer all over the place. Realizing what he had just done, he took off. I dropped in behind him just long enough to get his tag number as I dialed 911... I hung back and kept an eye on him until I could talk to a live person...

911: 9-1-1, what is your emergency?
ME: Yes, I'd like to report a drunk driver.
911: What makes you think he's drunk?
ME: Well, he just threw his beer at me and hit the side of my car.
911: Oh. I see. Um, where are you located? Let me see if I have a unit in the area...

Not sure what happened to him, but I'll bet his day didn't end as well as mine.

This is why I try to keep the locations of all the local Police stations in mind. I have had that happen a couple times. Nothing malevolent mind you, just coincidences where people happen to live near me. Enough though to have me thinking if I should drive around and start heading in the direction of the Police station. If they follow me there, I can get out. In theory they shouldn't try anything in a PD parking lot.

I live just across 15th Street from Plano PD.

I had something simular to this happemn when I was in college and had a CRX. Couple drunk rednecks were pissed cause I was driving the speedlimit in a construction zone and they could not pass. Right after the construction they wipped around me and started throwing empty cans (luckily no bottles). I was easily able to dodge them.

I bet they would not have done that if I was in the RAM I have now. They tend to pick on the smaller cars.
