Flex them if you got them
-
Are you going to run the stock Flex spring rates? Stock sways?
-
Nice... I hope you plan to get an alignment before Saturday.

jeff, the correct answer to Thomas' question is: I am keeping the stock spring rates. I will be upgrading to racing beat sway bars in the future. ;)

I was asking if you about the spring rates, not the damping, preload or ride height.
The stock flexes come with a 7kg/mm spring rate up front and 6kg/mm rate in the back. This setup is pretty prone to a lot of oversteer. I got 9kg/mm springs for the front and kept the 6 in the back.
If you're still on stock spring rates, I'd consider removing the rear sway bar for this weekend. At least be ready to disconnect it at the track is the car is too squirrely.
Are you planning on getting both front and rear RB sway bars?

Great suggestion. I'm planning this for the future; once I have a daily driver. Gary@trackdog has 10kg front and 8kg rear Swift Springs on the "track dog".
I suggested to Jeff that he might consider disconnecting the rear bar for the weekend, last night.
-
Yep, Jon is right, just go ahead and pull the rear sway.
I'll also suggest that you only buy a RB front bar and decide if you want to run the stock rear bar or no bar at all.
I'm running a RB hollow front bar and no rear bar. I'm very happy with the balance on the car. There's a slight hint of understeer on highspeed sweepers that can very easily be dialed out with the right foot. Very confidence inspiring IMO compared to a twitchy car.

BTW Jon, the 9kg springs are very tolerable on the street with the damping about 10-12 clicks from full stiff. It was really comfortable with the stock seat, but not bad with the race seat.

I rode in the car with him right after Bo installed the FLEX. His 340 treadwear tires don't perform with the best grip, obviously. I did notice that it cornered flatter on the back roads, but he really needs better rubber to feel the optimal effect.
After Bo installed my FLEX last february, the car felt better, but it wasn't until I went with the azenis and the RB bars that I noticed the biggest difference.

o dude i did the bush to 75 sweeper at 85 with 0 tire chatter and no killing of the :cat:, bet i could have given it more. i hit it at 70 on the stock set up with the feeling i was sliding at the wall

BTW can't wait to see what they will do with good rubber

Jeff will definitely be winning the HPDE championship now! Nothing like sticky R-comps to mask driving mistakes. ;)

These rookies are gearing up for the weekend like it's qualifying for Le Mans. Way too much R compound and testosterone in these novice groups...

75min CW 100min CCW hallett, 4 autox runs miata / 20-25 runs 88rx7. i was more defending the fact that i will be at the track more then just this weekend and i didn't go out and spend 2-2.2k for 4 runs at MSR :D

Jeff, with three total hours of track time under you're belt, you're definitely still a greehorn rookie. In fact, you're probably more dangerous than someone with no track experience, because you've got just enough experience to think you know it all, but not nearly enough to know what to do if something really goes wrong.
Good luck out there this weekend. Keep it shiny side up.

some people say you wont learn but all i had for the event was run my 340s or go buy some 200s and also daily drive them. a deal on Rs and rims cam up so i took it. on top of that i plan to be at the track enough for the rest of the year to just have a set of track tires. when it's time for new tires on my daily I'm going to get some nicer rubber and do some apex events on street tires. not trying to get Rs and say I'm a better drive because i have more grip.
-
That's all fine and good, and no one is telling you what to do. But what concerns people is for relative track newbies to hit the track with R-compounds, ESPECIALLY in a less advanced run group. Nothing good can come from that.
1. You will learn next to nothing about your driving skills, since the R compounds will mask most bad habits and make you think you're a much better driver than you really are.
2. Once those R compounds do let go, good luck trying to keep your Miata on the track.
3. Above all, running those tires in a novice or even intermediate group will allow you to run deeper into corners and possibly crowd other not-so-experienced drivers on less sticky tires. That's a recipe for disaster.
My advice to you: Keep your ego in check and don't rely on your tires to make you a hero. Give all other cars in your group enough room to drive to their capabilities.

more concerned with not wrecking my car then anything else

If that's truly the case, leave your RA-1s at home.

I have been meaning to up the rear rates to 350-400lb springs since I put the SM 325lb springs in. I really like the 700lb front SM springs, but always thought the rear was way too soft.

Learn on slower, less-forgiving tires and you'll be even faster with the sticky rubber.

i plan to run the 1st section and maybe even the 2nd on my pos street tires just so i can see how mush the flexes and alignment really changed the car but then off to the Ra1s so i don't run my street tires dry, i don't have any more money for tires for at lest 2 months.

In my experience, these moments of poor judgment are more often preceded by "I betcha can't...". Some common examples include "I betcha can't beat me", "I betcha can't jump that gap", or my personal favorite, "Hey Jon... I betcha can't fit in that trunk".

It's going to be a high of 96 on Saturday.....wooooowheeeeee
Better have that radiator and hoses in tiptop shape.
BTW....23 sessions at MSR, 4 sessions at Hallett and I am NOT using R compounds. My Azeni's are just fine ::db2::

I guess I can add a coolant flush to the list of stuff I have to do this week. What is the optimum coolant/water ratio? And which coolant?
-
I use the standard 50/50 but I also have a dual core radiator and a 160degree thermostat.
