Thread: Hyundai Engine question

    Default Hyundai Engine question

Neighbor bought a Hyundai Santa Fe at auction. It died on him on the way home. the tow truck driver seems to think it broke the timing belt. It's possible.

So does anyone know if the Hyundai 3.3L V-6 is an interferance or non-interferance engine?

Pretty sure it is interference design, one of the things I remember from looking for an SUV for my girl.

My wife found a thread on a Hyundai board last night that said all of the Hyundai engines are interference designs.

That's one thing I like about the O'Reilly Auto website. It'll generally tell you if it's interference or non-interference... and it lists Interference as the engine type when looking up the timing belt.

Good luck with the fix. Hopefully the pistons aren't cracked and that nothing came apart to shred cylinder walls.

Well, the belt broke at 60 MPH on the highway. He asked me what I thought the chance was of little to no damage. I said slim to none. we removed the plastic engine cover yesterday and the timing belt housing had several holes in it and the belt itself was sticking out of the housing at the bottom. I told him there is no way on knowing the damage until he pulls the heads but that I figured it was going to be a complete rebuild if not an engine replacement.

If he's LUCKY, it'll be bent valves and a valve job.

If he's kinda lucky, it'll need new pistons.

If he's unlucky, it'll need a new head.

If he's VERY unlucky it'll need a new block.

At that point, he'd be better off buying a junkyard motor and putting a new timing belt on it ASAP.
