I was planning on changing the oil on my orphaned NC, and found this picture for the oil filter.

So I take it Mazda/Ford went back to a non replaceable canister setup? I had that same set-up on my Triumph TR6.
"orphaned NC", you babysitting, or just bailing out a family member?

Man thanks for all that information to help me our Merv!
But I do believe you may be on to something, I'll try to keep it simple so ya don't have to type as much.
Does your NB's filter look like this =

From what I have read, Mazda switched to the cartridge filter on the 2.3 Mazda3, but used a standard spin on for the 2.0 Mazda3. Since the NC has the 2.0, the spin on carried over. If the upcoming Mazdaspeed NC has the 2.3 Turbo as has been reported, we may see the cartridge filter for the Mazdaspeeds.
The NC uses a spin on. I got to see it up close last summer.
