My brothers 99 has a noise that I am trying to track down in the drivetrain. You can reproduce at will by putting the car in reverse and lightly hit the gas. It sounds like there is metal rubbing somewhere, almost like dust shields on the brakes......but that has been checked, and the issue is only while the car is in gear. If you just take the car out of gear and coast in reverse, no noise.
We raise the car up on jack stands and put the car in reverse, no noise. It seems to be suspension load/clutch related.
Any ideas where to start on this?

Definitely rubbing. From some other posts similar on m.net we are looking in to a replacement drive shaft.
Very weird, as it was a sudden start to the noise and it seems to be getting worse.
We will know more soon.
So to complete the thread, it was the drive shaft (propeller shaft in Mazda parts speak). Changed out and all is good again.
Partsgroup came through again with great service.
Completely off topic, but your screen name is weirding me out. My last go-fast car was a WRX and before that it was an MR2.
