In all fairness, the article never said she swung at, or even approached, the cops. The workers saw her in a window with a hammer. Maybe she was trying to kill (an imaginary) spider?!? They entered her home, and then they tasered her. indeed...

And before I get flamed for being a cop hater, I will be the first to admit they have a tough job and I wouldn't want to do it. But I can also tell you that if some 5'1", 82 year old woman that welfare was checking on because she was known to have dementia, came at me with a hammer, I think even without police training that I could resolve the situation without a taser. How fast could she come at you? Here's an idea: back up. Eventually she'll wear herself out and lie down for a nap! Cops have a hard job and a lot of deserve to get zapped. But if some gung-ho cop tasered my grandmother (who has alzheimer's, btw) I would be pissed!! There are a lot of alternative solutions than sending 50,000 volts into an elderly woman. Especially one who is in her own home. How much of a danger to other people is she? I can't imagine she's creating more of a danger to herself than the danger of 50,000 volts hitting her. Does swinging a hammer in your own home warrant zapping an old woman who very well may not survive it? I'd say using the taser was a poor choice...
