Surprised at the 8 year life expectancy.
Our family wants to adopt a female English Bulldog. Looking online brings lots of hits on AKC Breeders who want $1600-$2500 for a puppy.
We've looked into Bulldog Rescues but they still want $500 and the dogs either have expensive health issues or temperament issues.
All we want is a puppy to provide a good home to and it seems if you want a particular breed, you're going to pay out the ass.![]()

Get a mixed breed rescue dog. Not only are you giving an unwanted dog a home, but mixed breed dogs almost always have fewer health issues than pure breds.
We have a purebred Shiba Inu (bred from a Westminster champion, no less) and she has diet and patellar luxation issues, both of which are common with the breed. We've spent a lot over the years on surgery for her knee problems, and we have to feed her a special food because she is allergic to poultry, which is present in almost all dog foods. We love her, but pure bred dogs are just a lot more hassle on average.
By contrast, our rescue Border Collie/Sheltie/Pomeranian mix has had no health issues at all. She was a lot cheaper as well. She does like to bark, though...
Seriously, I'd suggest staying away from pure bred dogs unless you just have to have whatever breed you're looking for. In that case, I'd also suggest doing a lot of research on the breed you're looking at before you buy - some breeds have more specific health/temperament issues than others, and may not match your lifestyle.

If you're willing to check regularly and wait for months the perfect dog will eventually be on there. After 6 and a half months I found a pretty pure-bread looking great dane puppy.
Save your money. Go to your local animal shelter and save a mutt, or go here -

yea man those things are very expensive
my old lady wants one too
along with the high cost to get one they almost always end up with expensive vet care and require a lot of it, not too mention just a lot of little things you have to do daily to them. my best friend used to breed them for $2500 each for males and $3000 for females and he got rid of all of them due to their health issues
i have seen a few pop up on CL for about 800 lol

+1 on getting a mutt from a shelter. I used to volunteer at Operation Kindness up in Carrollton and they always had a bunch of really cute pups up for adoption. If I didn't already have a dog, I would've taken one home the first day I set foot in there.
I've had two freebie mutts that came from the country. Molly was even the product of a stray dog train wreck that ended with 11 pups. Absolutely ZERO pedigree, but the best disposition... nothing fazes her. She'd be perfect if my folks hadn't spoiled the shit out of her.![]()

We had a purebred Boxer for a while, but it had separation anxiety issues. We sent him back to the Boxer rescue we got him from after he ate a yard of carpet one day when we were at work. He was replaced with a border collie/lab mix from the pound who has been great for over 2 years now.
William,
I too am fond of the Bullie breeds and have had an Old English. "Mack"
You should look at American Bulldogs.
They are attractive and good tempered.
I rescued a American Bulldog a year ago, and found him on Petfinder.com.
He minds so well, my neighbors are amazed.
Good with kids and kitties too.

my male siberian husky has seperation issues we have yet to be able to break .... he has to be kenneled if we are gone more than 15 minutes or he destroys the house,
he was a rescue from someone that chained him to a tree with no food and water and beat him when he would cry ... was soo timid when we got him when i would put my hand out to pet him he would pee all over himself ... thank god we broke that habit lol
