Toyota is airing a series of commercials with people rigging 'accidents' to get new cars.
The message is obviously absurd, but I find it offensive. They are in effect saying that if you're tired of your car, let the insurance company buy you a new one. What do you think?
Car companies need to bring back car comercial based on truth, justice and the american way!

You mean like this one?
Get a Z and get the girl... works every time!![]()
1 & 2 - Joe was evil and deserved to catch a bullet.
3 - Dinah was great, even if she had to lie about her ancestory to get a job.
4 - If you don't say anything, you can't lie or mislead anyone. That's etched in stone on 5th avenue!
It was romantic even if Ken jumped to his death from the third story balcony.
None of those commercials promoted insurance fraud, or anything else immoral. Well, OK, adultery in the Z commercial, but it was the 80's.
The one that caught my eye is the one where the guy buries his car in snow so the snowplow demolishes it. Jokingly I said to the wife "I'm surprised they don't have a disclaimer, like 'don't try this at home', only to see the same commercial a few days later with a disclaimer that actually said "do not attempt". I got a chuckle out of that.
Now the same commercial no longer has that short-lived warning. What happened? Is Toyota's legal department having concerns about what exactly is the message here? Just wondering.
So Onething what does this Toyota commercial promote?

While I don't think the ads are really that funny I applaud the risk.
Our ads are so watered down and full of disclaimers it’s sad. Everything seems to be written to the lowest common denominator.
My feeling on it is that the commercial does not give those of us that would have never committed such fraud reason to go out and do so.
Just like watching 30 seconds of Desperate Housewives compels me to cheat on my wife?
By the mere fact that people are talking about it makes it a success in some ways.
Bravo Toyota for trying something different.
Should society focus on percieved threats to ethics or actual breaches of ethics that cause injury or death?
Two recent examples with Ford:
Example 1: Exploding Crown Vics
Panther Series Police Package cars are recalled due to Officer Injury/Death due to fires from rear collision. One officer in Ft. Worth died recently.
Ford's response was to recall only the police package cars leaving the civillian cars unprotected. Since 2003, at least 11 civilian deaths have been identified as rear tank ruptures.
Example 2: Firestone Tread Seperation
Failure to act quickly on the tread separation in Firestone tires and the Explorer.
A 1999 memo from Bridgestone/Firestone to Ford asked cooperation of Ford to keep quiet the tread separation events in Saudi Arabia.
A year later in September 2000 the NHTSA started questioning ford about the mounting US deaths. At that time 134 deaths had been linked in the US to the tread seperation.
Ford and Bridgestone were grilled about their lack of timely response and cover-up.
Then the blame game happened... Bridgestone blamed the Explorer design, Ford blamed denied everything.
Shortly there after the Explorer was redesigned.
What does this one promote besides boobs moving up and down?

i didnt get the impression of insurance fraud. i simply thought it was suggesting that you are screwing up your car to have a reason to make yourself get a new one.
if this commercial was about blowing up your tv in order to run down to best buy and get a new one i dont think anyone would call foul.
