This will probably equate to ~70MPG by US measurements ... still impressive.
VW engineers are on their game... now lets see if it will make it over here.
In the past 10 years VW have made some great products for the euro market.
One that comes to mind is their 1.6 Supercharged and Turbocharged engine.

That's pretty close - my math sez ~69 gallons. Still impressive, if it bears out in real-world driving conditions.
(For those who are wondering, an Imperial gallon - as used in Europe - is actually 1.2 US gallons, so when you see European fuel consumption numbers quoted in gallons, you really need to multiply by .83 to get a comparable figure in US gallons.)
