You just answered your own question. When cars were on course, everyone was basically running hot laps. 2 guys covering corner-1 (me being 1 of them), which included the 70-mph 19-cone slalom and that fun finish.(Not to mention yay-hoo's like JRJ who was purposely knocking down slalom cones)

Combination of carrying lots of speed early, and finding a convenient place to shift. The optimal shift point for acceleration would have been in the middle of a steering movement. I'd rather shift when I can do one thing at a time. Stuff happens quickly when you are going that fast and us old guys are lucky to be able to keep up with it all.

BTW, I printed out my aerial photo of MR that I use to design my courses and I have noticed that you can see a definite line across the portion where everyone was complaining about the gravel and the different texture. I will make it a point to void it other than crossing over it.
