I came across downed cones near the finish.

I'm wondering why with such a low turnout these guys aren't picking them up in time.

You just answered your own question. When cars were on course, everyone was basically running hot laps. 2 guys covering corner-1 (me being 1 of them), which included the 70-mph 19-cone slalom and that fun finish. (Not to mention yay-hoo's like JRJ who was purposely knocking down slalom cones)

I was definitely riding the limiter down to the pivot, but I'm not sure it was worth an upshift. Getting shut down for the pivot and back on the gas again early was crucial, and I think trying to squeeze in a downshift right there would have potentially cost me more time than it saved.

Third gear for me in the Miata. 2nd is rev-limited to around 56. According to the data logger, I topped out at 66 MPH before braking/turning/shifting (in that order).

I did notice you went into 3rd pretty early on the offsets. Is that due to different final drive, tire diameter or were you just carrying that much more speed into it? I did notice you were incredibly smooth at high speed even with a shift into 3rd.

Combination of carrying lots of speed early, and finding a convenient place to shift. The optimal shift point for acceleration would have been in the middle of a steering movement. I'd rather shift when I can do one thing at a time. Stuff happens quickly when you are going that fast and us old guys are lucky to be able to keep up with it all.

BTW, I printed out my aerial photo of MR that I use to design my courses and I have noticed that you can see a definite line across the portion where everyone was complaining about the gravel and the different texture. I will make it a point to void it other than crossing over it.

How updated are those photos? Seems like MW is always changing, this time there was a huge pile of gravel in one corner, a bumper laying in the middle of the back offsets and last year it developed a huge sink hole. The place has a mind of it's own.
