Thread: Best places to take out-of-towners

Default Best places to take out-of-towners

I'm looking for suggestions on where to take out of town visitors to give them a good Texas experience. I'd like to find a mechanical bull somewhere, but don't limit your suggestions to that. All input appreciated!

If you want a nice Country/Western adventure, go to Billy Bob's in FTW.

as in all over texas or just the metroplex? i can think of a few places you'd want to go.

    - Big Tex Steakhouse in Abilene. If nobody is eating a 72 oz. steak to entertain you, you are obligated to order one.

    - Float the Guadalupe. Buy a case of Shiner or Lone Star and enjoy your afternoon and the TX scenery.

    - Gulf of Mexico. Tourists will like Galveston or Corpus more than smaller places, but if you want a more laid-back experience try Port Aransas.

    - Stay away from East Texas. There is no reason to go there, ever.

    - Alamo, of course. The Riverwalk is nice this time of year.

    - Austin, anywhere as long as it's not crowded with trendy new age hippie types.

    - In DFW: the stockyards, the Reata, NOT downtown Dallas, Zoo (why not?)

    - Go to Six Flags and take them for a ride on the Texas Giant.

    - Buy them some real barbecue.

If you're in the downtown Ft. Worth area check out Sundance Square. The water gardens used to be an attraction at one time. Don't know if it still is. I know they had to limit some access after an accident a few years back.

Bavarian Grill. I mean, what would say more about Texas than eating large slabs of schnitzel, drinking German beers, listening to Ompah music, and seeing girls in "peasant dresses"? Oh, and don't forget the guys in leather pants?

Hey, don't knock East Texas. I used to live in Kirbyville

Oh.... I think I see your point. Nevermind.

    - Austin, anywhere as long as it's not crowded with trendy new age hippie types.
May I ask where you can go in Austin where it's NOT crowded with hippies?? There's even hippy cowboys there. It feels like a smaller San Francisco

    - Buy them some real barbecue.
+1!!! You can't experience Texas without real BBQ.

Hands down, the best Fried Chicken and Chicken Fried Steak in the country can be enjoyed at Babe's Chicken Dinner House in Roanoke, Texas.

Also, Scarborough Faire opens this weekend, I think...

I've been to that one and the one in Carrolton... and I agree. They're the best I've EVER had.

How 'bout a Tuesday Night with the east siders or a Wednesday with the west siders? The Fort Worth zoo is first class or Bass Hall. SPORTS, Baseball game, FW Cats, Frisco Riders or your last place Rangers Stars and Mavs are in the playoffs.

Stockyards during day and Sundance Square at night. FW botanical gardens, Dallas aburium (sp)

If they like live music, lots of venue for that. Maybe Billy will be playing close.
Hmm what is decent? Are we talking about your decent or my decent? I'm just curious because I don't want to offend anyone else's decent...

Surprised no one mentioned the Dallas World Aquarium. The fairgrounds are a nice drive thru with the art deco architecture. +1 on the Ft. Worth Zoo. Six Flags is full of amusement park history, (first rolled steel coaster, first back-to-back loop coaster, tallest coaster in Texas, and first log flume) it's the original Six Flags park. If they like bass fishing take 'em to Ray Roberts or Lake Fork. Or just take 'em to Bass Pro Shops on the way back to airport so they can see live lunkers. Just make sure you take 'em back to the airport.
