    Default Hill Country Tour

I hope you don't mind a brand new member jumping in an talking about planning an event. Every fall for the last umpteen years I have made an annual motorcycle trip to the Texas Mecca of scenery and spirited driving/riding. Having promised everyone that I would stay off the bikes since my accident last fall, I am wondering if any of you would be interested in a tour of the best roads in the state.

The area of the hill country around Leakey, Tx. is world famous among the sport bike crowd and people travel from around the world to ride the area. There is a route called "Three sisters" composed of Texas roads 335, 336 and 337 that is approximately 100 miles of turns, twists and sheep crossing the road. If you go to Mapquest and pull up Leakey, Tx you will see a map and can get airial shots of the landscape.

I usually plan the trip in the fall and have found that the best weather is in October. The family vacations are over and the the swimmers have given it up for the summer. Lot's of things to do in the area including swimming (rivers are clear and COLD), shopping and eating in Fredricksburg, visiting the most beautiful state park in Texas (Garner state park) and just hanging out at the Frio Canyon Resort in Leakey.

If you are interested in making the trip, post a reply and I will see if we can get a group rate at the resort.

Here are some pictures of some of the roads around the area:

Been down there many times on my bike.........if I am not working I would be up for a Miata trip down there that time of year.

My wife and I would be interested as well. We've been down there a couple of times in the Miata. If you want the wives and girlfriends along I might recommend planning nicer accommodation's. Plenty of B&B's down there.

This sounds like fun. We'd planned to go for a motorcycle rally not too long ago - but it was mainly valk snobs and accomodations were already booked up solid.

If you think Harley riders are snobs...then you've never met a valkyrie owner...I known one in particular that won't do the black hills rally (sturgis) because "it's all harleys"...how WRONG he is!

D'Rose Inn caters solely to motorcyclists and bicyclists because the area is so popular. Accomodations fill up fast anytime there is a rally going on so it would be prudent to check for a good date for this Miata "rally"

I am tentatively interested. I will have to see what is going on come fall. I may not have time off to take, or I may be going to California to see family.

About where to stay: I always packed a tent on the bike and stayed wherever the whim took me, usually Garner State park. The park does have cabins for rent but they are usually booked years in advance. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/f.../parks/garner/

If you have reccomendations for places to stay I would be glad to contact them or we could just set up times for the tour/drives and everybody stay where they please. I was thinking about a weekend thing instead of a long trip and scheduling drives on Sat. afternoon and Sun. morning with some kind of GTG on Saturday night.

My wife is due to have a baby on Oct. 22nd so I dont see her going and I am not sure if I could even make it. For one, my wife is having a baby! Two, My car is in pieces and as much as I hope to have it together by then, who knows. But that would be a great trip to break it in on. Absolutely sounds liek a blast and should be made into an annual thing, I think.

Maybe we should plan it to coincide with Lone Star Miata's GTG? What do you think?

What about this weekend? It's a 3-day holiday might be hard to get hotel but we should have good camp weather should we need to pitch tents.

Good luck getting a reservation anywhere. I tried to plan a motorcycle trip last month and most places were booked for this weekend.

Some of the old Outlaws did this a couple years ago and it was a blast. I'm in for a Fall trip.

We stayed at Foxfire Cabins http://www.foxfirecabins.com

If you plan on driving all day Saturday, SO probably wouldn't have as much fun.
