I also think there needs to be an all of the above.
Neighbor to the left is a complete asshole (ask Bean)
Neighbors to the right and across the street are nice to wave to.
Foreign (read as Hispanics that have 20 people living with them)are strangers.
Neighbors with kids that play with my kids are friends. The parents hang out at night lately and I tend to be the only Dad that is "cool" since I wear Chuck Taylors, ride the kids scooters, skateboards and rip sticks and drive the cool sports car. That's what the kids say anyway.

Meh... my neighbors are boring. On one side I have the husband & wife who wave now and then and make small talk (I know her name, not his, lol), and on the other side we have some guys that hang around outside and BBQ now and then. Across the street, they wave once in a while. That's about it. We usually don't have any loud music, screaming kids, nothing like that... it's peaceful.
Naturally, I live in the crappiest renthouse on the street![]()

I used to live in a 4-plex where I knew all my neighbors. We even exchanged keys with 2 out of the 3 so our dogs could play together any time they got bored. I would often come home to find my neighbor's blue heeler asleep in my bed...

I've never been a "meet the neighbors" kind of person. I have friends, and I've never had (made) time for all that... neighbor stuff. But my wife had me go to a couple of parties in the neighborhood, and I found out that these folks are fun! It's really a change for me, and makes me regret all the time I spent not meeting the neighbors before. That's not to say that everyone on my block is fantastic, and there are certainly folks that we never really talk to, but the ones we do hang out with are great.
The best thing we've done is had New Year's Eve Parties at our houses. No worrying about driving home or staying in a hotel -- we just walk between each others houses -- and geez the parties have been a blast. Took me two days to recover from this past NYE party...

All of the above.
Neighbors on one side speak no English, but are very nice and have a beautiful lawn. Maybe after we re-sod this weekend our lawn will look almost as nice.
The ones on the other side are nice enough. Though I never see them outside, their backyard is a jungle (I could care less), and they didn't mow their front lawn for a month. Thats not really a big deal to me.
The ones across the street are just irritating. Their friends used to constantly park in front of my house. I wouldn't have minded it on occasion, but it stopped before I had to go talk to them.

Within the first year that I moved into my house - I rallied up everyone to have a block party and we started a neighborhood watch program. Great way to get to know who is who. Since then, many houses have sold and the neighborhood has definitely changed. It went from owner occupied to renter occupied now I think it's getting back to owner occupied.
I am good with all my neighbors except for the ones directly behind my house - they have four dogs that bark all the time - four large dogs barking and howling and it sounds like I live next to a kennel. The noise is nearly enough to make me want to move and the nieghbors don't seem to care and the city does nothing to enforce the barkind dog ordinance.
One neighbor heard me mowing my (overgrown) backyard and my mower kept stalling and the next thing I know he is right beside me with HIS mower helping me mow it - he has one of those mowers with the gigantic wheels on it....have to admit...they are my favorite neighbors. I'd do just about anything for them and they'd do the same...good thing too because they are noisy and they always take up all the parking in front of my house and theirs including parking in front of the mailbox. But all I have to do is go knock on the door and they'll move their car if the mail hasn't run yet....they are more aware now and try not to block it.
Turns out we're the weird foreigners on our block. My lovely wife scolded the neighbor's kids for climbing over the fence (and breaking it). Now they tell their little friends to be careful, as Supernanny lives next door!![]()
That sucks.
You could get an air horn. Anytime they start barking, give the air horn a little honk.
Or you can also put a bunch of pennies/change in a plastic bottle or soda can and tape it up. Throw it against the fence whenever they start barking. For some reason most dogs don't like it. I didn't think it worked till I tried it on my dogs. It even works better than a shock collar in some instances.
I'm very sensitive to barking dogs, other peoples' and my own. I don't put up with my dogs barking and I expect other owners in the neighborhood to have the same standard. Don't take that crap.
Chris
cArAzzIE,
Who are you calling about the barking dog? My wife wasn't getting any results in Lewisville by calling the various city departments so she called the City Manager's office and complained. WOW. Things got done in a hurry.![]()
