I went when I was 18. It was a blast. Because of the distance from earth you don't feel like you are screaming towards it. It was actually very peaceful in the air. Once you got over getting out of the plane it was very fun just "floating" I havent bungee jumped, but considering that if you go on a tandem skydive someone else has their self interest at heart, when you go bungee jumping you just hope the guy picked out the right cord for you.

Why does the guy with the parachute get the helmet and the newbie only gets goggles?

I would guess the newbie's helmet might hit the instructor's mouth or nose.
