Thread: Hey! You forgot to lock your door and close your garage!

Default Hey! You forgot to lock your door and close your garage!

Would you want the police to wake you up and tell you your door was ajar and your garage door was open? I would...I certainly wouldn't feel *violated* ...

    LAKEVILLE, Minnesota (AP) --
A Lakeville man says he feels violated after two police officers woke him up at 3 a.m. to tell him his door was unlocked.

Their surprise visit was part of a public service campaign to remind residents to secure their homes to prevent thefts. Usually, officers just leave notices on doors.
But they went further in Troy Molde's case on Thursday. Police entered the house where four children under 7 were having a sleepover, and then went upstairs to Molde's bedroom.
The officers told Molde his garage door was open, the TV was on, the keys to his truck were left in the ignition and the door to his house was ajar.
A police spokesman says the intrusion was justified because the officers' initial door knocks went unanswered, and they wanted to make sure nothing was wrong.
He says the kids inside -- Molde's two sons and two nephews -- were afraid to wake their dad, so the officers went upstairs.

Some people take offense at being told they are an igmo.

I'm going to guess alcohol may have been involved, what with the door open and keys in the truck, etc...

    He's lucky he wasn't "violated".

Not sure how big Lakeville, MN is, but in small country towns around here people still leave their keys in the ignition while eating at the local DQ. My uncle in Kansas goes out of town for the weekend and leaves the garage door unlocked without a thought. Keys are left in the ignition of the car in case someone has an emergency and needs to borrow the vehicle to go into town.

OTOH, I grew up in East Dallas. I would'nt dare do that!

    MSP suburb.

Agreed that in a rural environment this might not have happened.

my friend that owns the body shop got a rude surprise...

he just bought a house in seagoville. he woke up one morning, too
k a shower, went downstairs in a towel to get a drink... decided to open the back door for a breeze. walks into the den, and decides to plop down on the sofa with the laptop to check his mail quickly. Next thing he knows, 2 armed men are screeming "freeze, put your hads in the air" he is kinda shocked, realises they are cops. They tell him to stand up and put his hands where they can see them... he says about the towel... he stands up, and of course towel slips down. They ask to see some ID... at which point he looses it and starts screaming, says here are my keys, grabs them off the den table and tosses to them. starts walking up the stairs to get clothes and his wallet. Luckily, his concealled gun was in his room, not the den on the desk where he normally leaves it, or things might have gotten very interesting.....

Were pretty lax around here, but everyone is well armed.

Bust in my door, i'll shoot, then ask questions.

I will never sneak in on Barbara, she is a much better shot than I am.

This reminds me of the guy killed in Dallas by the cops that kicked in the wrong door, and shot the man saying WTF, while picking up his gun.
    Ooops, sorry.

Wow. I could understand maybe a knock on the door or ringing the doorbell (I'd still take offense to it, being 3AM), but there's no way in heck I'd let someone walk into my house in the middle of the night like that. Even if they yelled "Police!" how am I supposed to know if it's a burglar trying to throw me off?? IDIOTS. They're lucky they didn't get shot.

I've had cops walk into my house once unannounced because my door was ajar (bad doorknob, didn't latch correctly). I'm glad I thought it was my brother coming in, otherwise I would have answered them with a gun in my hand.

I don't want anybody coming into my house unannounced at 3AM - I don't care who the hell you are.

It doesn't matter if he feels violated, they dont have to even knock, just walk in your house these days without a warrant and are protected under the Patriot Act, so if you shoot a cop in your house you'd better be making your last stand cause if they dont kill you on the spot they will later by electric chair.

You'd best just lay down and let them do what they want to you.

Now how could I have guessed that Billy would turn this into some kind of anti-government rant?

I wish more cops were that concerned where I live. We had our car broken into one night, and we called the cops, and they didn't give a shit. "Go online and file a report." They wouldn't even send a patrol by to check out the neighborhood.
Wealth, power, and experience are apparently not enough to save us from social influences. Groupthink, as described by I.L.Janis, is the tendency for group members to reach a consensus opinion, even if that decision is downright stupid (Janis 1982).

True. Except for Old Sparky, nowadays it would be lethal injection.

    Thumbs up

Violated no, concerned yes. I had the cops ring my door bell one night and it was very late. They told me I had left my garage door open. I thought it was pretty cool, because I had forgotten to close it, thus my house was open for anyone to come in.

Me, too. We live so far out that we have to go toward town to hunt squirrels.
