I take it the new harddrive didn't take care of the problem?

FWIW, I just picked up an HP Pavilion a6720f for around $550 at Fry's. Specs are:
AMD Phenom Quad-core 2.2GHz
NVIDIA GeForce 9100 Chipset
6 GB (2 x 2048 MB, 2 x 1024 MB)
640GB SATA HardDrive
Pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
For the price, I thought it was well worth it. Spend another $200 for an Acer H233H 23" widescreen LCD display -- Don't think I found a better deal for a monitor. I realize it's Acer, but it really is an incredible display.

Good news - New hard drive is in, Windoze is re-installed and interweb connection is working.
Bad news - My USB external hard drive thinks it's empty. It's attached and wants me to format when I try to explore it. I think it's driver related. It's supposed to be SCSI attached via USB (somehow magically), but it's setup as regular USB. Anyone have a clue?
I think I figured out the problem (or part of it). The external drive has somehow been configured with a filetype of RAW instead of NTFS.
Fixing it (I hope!) is next. I will be crushed if I lose this thing.I have some old CD backups, but they aren't near what is all on that drive.

samm, try booting off an ubuntu or knoppix live cd. I bet it sees your external (and internal) drive just fine and you can copy from one to the other.
RAW is not a filesystem. Ubuntu would likely autodetect it more correctly than Windows. Worth a try vs. trying to recover it (which means data loss).
Success! All my data was safely recovered. Big thanks to TC for the Tech Support help!
On a side note, my DVD burner has stopped working. I still think I have a hardware issue of some sort.
