D.W. Rutledge, executive director of the Texas High School Coaches Association, said that in all the years he's coached, he's never heard of using staged fights to settle disputes.
"Obviously, that's extremely unacceptable," he said.

It used to be the way disputes were settled. I remember in the 6th grade being yanked from a playground scuffle by the principal and put into a vacant classroom and told to go at it. Funny thing, Jere Gilbert and I were good friends for years after that.

Same thing years later in high school, except this time me and my adversary, Gary Byers, were told to settle our feud by putting on the boxing gloves; but first we had to bring signed permission from a parent. With absolutely no chance of getting them to sign off on something as crude as a fight, I wrote up my own permission slip and forged a parental style signature. And, since I was on a roll, I printed up a bunch of "tickets" for the "Rumble in the Jungle" and passed them out to my friends.

Coincidentally, someone I don't even remember found me many years later on classmates.com to tell me that she still had her "ticket".

When the day of the fight arrived, Sgt. Bell asked us if we had our permission slips. I walked up to his desk and handed it to him in front of the class. Then he said, "Byers, got yours?"

He squirmed and then said those words he would regret for the rest of his high school career, "My mother wouldn't give me one" Classroom eruption ensued.

That had to hurt worse than anything I could have done to him with a pair of gloves. Poor guy, don't know if he ever was able to live that one down.

I used to play golf with a Rutlidge and went to school with his son. He lost a lot of money to me back in the day

If you were caught fighting in my High School, the coaches would take you to the Field House, put 16 oz gloves on you and the two of you would fight untill you were friends. It worked! Now the girls, they would let them fight in the hall and allow the boys to watch the show.
