To Protect and ServeDALLAS — Racing to see his dying mother-in-law at a Plano hospital, an NFL player found himself delayed by a Dallas officer as her life ebbed away. It's a story that has sparked outrage across North Texas and generated interest around the country.
It all started in the early morning hours of March 17. With his wife and another woman in the car, Ryan Moats — a running back for the Houston Texans — sped his car toward Baylor Regional Medical Center of Plano. But when the Moats arrived at the emergency room parking lot, they were stopped by Officer Robert Powell, who reportedly drew his service revolver on the concerned family members.
Dashcam video from the Dallas officer's patrol car captured the incident.
"Get in there," Officer Powell yelled out to Tamishia Moats, Ryan's wife, as she exited the car. "Let me see your hands. Get in there. Put your hands on the car."
"Excuse me; my mom is dying," Tamisha Moats replied.
She and the other woman ignored Officer Powell's commands and rushed inside the hospital to her dying mother as Ryan Moats and Officer Powell went back-and-forth over insurance paperwork the NFL player was unable to locate.
MOATS: "I've got seconds before she's gone, man."
POWELL: "Listen: If I can't verify you have insurance..."
MOATS: "My mother-in-law is dying!"
POWELL: "Listen to me."
MOATS: "Right now, you're wasting my time."
POWELL: "If you can't verify you have insurance, I'm going to tow your car. So, you either find it or I am going to tow the car."
As they argued, the officer got irritated.
POWELL: "Shut your mouth. Shut your mouth. You can either settle down and cooperate, or I can just take you to jail for running a red light."![]()

Amazing that nobody got killed that night. I've been in that exact same situation, adrenalin pumping, desperately trying to get to my father's side the night he passed away. Nothing short of a bullet in my back could have stopped me.
That's like a bad dream coming true. Freakin' idiot cop!![]()
I agree the cop messed up. Apparently, he hasn't seen the light yet.
What bothers me is that everytime I've heard this story - from here to national news this morning - they made a big deal out of "NFL player". From what I've seen in the last few years, that is justification for the officer's actions.
I didn't know you could get taken to jail for running a red light.

True, everybody's making a big deal that the guy is an "NFL player" - even though he's a third-string spare for that team down in Houston. That may be the only reason this made the national news. I give Moats credit for not once throwing down the "do you know who I am?" card...
Kunkle does not seem pleased, and I like what he had to say about the incident. I'll be curious to see what the end result will be (fired? desk jockey? quietly reinstated?). Sadly, if the guy gets fired, I bet he'll sue.

Kunkle's embarassed, to use his own words. Definitely not helpful to one's career when your actions have embarassed the chief.
Technically, the guy was doing his job. Whether he is fired over this depends on if being completely devoid of compassion for your fellow human being is grounds for termination.
Here's the complete unedited 17 minute video. At 15:45 the Plano cop says something prophetic. Be careful what you wish for.

So a vehicle with emergency flashers on is entering in to a hospital, and the cop is flying down the road to give them a ticket, and when he is talking to them in front of the hospital makes threats?
I have had to do just the same in the past to get a loved one to the hospital, and I have to say that the individuals are far nicer than I would have been in the same situation.
There is a special place in hell for a cop on an ego trip like that.
