What about this one? Any of you wiseguys have any input on this one?

It is going to be over $600 after tax?
Specs look decent to me. Could have a slightly faster processor but that will more than suffice for what you said you need to do with it. 3GB ram is nice and the hard drive is a good size. 6.6 pounds is quite a heffer though, if you travel much you will hate lugging this thing around after a while. Around the house and occasional travel should be ok.
I bet you can find it cheaper than at Best Buy though. Look for a deal on the bargain websites and try and use Microsoft Live Search cash back if it qualifies. I think it's around 10% off right now.

My last laptop was a Compaq and I was pleasantly surprised with how well it worked out. I used it for three years without an issue and sold it on craigslist in about an hour for $300.
Personally I'd want a 7200 RPM drive rather than a 5400 RPM. Other than that it looks OK

You may be surprised that this company actually makes at least 30% of the laptop of the world! Actually, more than 90% of the laptops are made in Taiwan by 2 or 3 companies! They have been designing and making them for all the name brand companies. Their business model is "out source their branding!". They are just getting into branding their own machines when they could not get any of the brand name company to interest in the sub $500 machines. The margin on this class of machine is less than paper thin.

I love my Toshiba... a bit big, but after 6 years its still running strong. was $500 at best buy on sale back then.... nowadays you can find a current version for about the same price.
Also, the roomate has an Asus 904 HA EEE, and he loves it. Ultra portable, keyboard is big enough, battery lasts forever (7 hours) and it came loaded with windows XP (boo on vista) for $320 shipped from New egg

For general browsing/email, you won't feel that much of a difference in processing speed. I noticed slightly upgrading from a 1.6 ghz core 2 duo to a T5400 2.16 ghz core 2 duo, but negligible.
My bro just got me a Toshiba Satellite with the same spec as OP's Gateway, but I returned it and paid the difference to get a Lenovo Y530 (I had to get in store credit). I had to pay $599 in store, but I've seen this as low as $540 off some sites (w/ T5400 processor, not the T640), and with computers, prices will always drop.
Oh, I have to mention that this laptop is veryyyyy pretty; brush aluminum palm/frame inside and a Dolby Home Theater Sound w/ 4 Speakers and Subwoofer.

brandonmpace, you don't get it, do you? We're not actually supposed to answer altiain's question, we're just suppose to keep giving him advice that he didn't ask for (i.e. "too heavy, big screen is bad, you can't have a 10 key, etc.).
Well done Mr. pace... finally a direct/useful answer to a direct/specific question.

Bought one of these today. So far so good and the screen is brilliant and as wide as my 2005 17" laptop, just not as tall because of the HD ratio. I decided to get with the times and start learning firefox while learning Vista. I have been looking at laptops a while, thanks brandonpace for the steer.

You're welcome. I work on people's computers all the time as well as build desktops for people so I keep up with prices.
Computer work is one of the few things I do for money right now. Currently looking for a job thoughMy dad doesn't want to pay for my insurance anymore.
Great move going with firefox. I hope it works well for you
