Thread: GPS reciever for a laptop?

Default GPS reciever for a laptop?

Anyone picked up a GPS receiver for their laptop? I am considering getting one for my EEE PC. Not sure if I should get a USB Dongle, or a bluetooth one. Bluetooth is nice as there is nothing to do to use it, but I would have to deal with the occasional recharge. Antone using on or the other?

I had a GPS with notebook. Its nice at first but a pain later on. I prefer a small handheld GPS you can use in the car with a power adapter or just batteries. If you want to download the data for analysis then get one that has track log capabilities.

I currently have a Garmin Oregon 400T with the street navigation software added to it. I can use it for navigation on-road and when off-road in the Jeep it has topographic maps and tracking as well. I did have a Garmin E-Trex Legend that was great for a basic GPS. It finally gave up the ghost after being abused for 5 years that is why I bought the Oregon.

what is it you want the GPS for?

I ordered a removable car mount kit (mounts to the passenger seat bolt and has a goose neck), mainly so I could do ECU tuning. It then occurred to me that I could cheaply add GPS and use it for additional data logging and nav.

I've got a Wintec G-Rays GPS module 10hz (bluetooth) that came with the MaxQData system I got from David (Davidss). I was able to connect it to my laptop easily and it worked with MS MapPoint. I haven't really done much other than test it a few times as I have an iPhone and prefer it for in car navigation for now. The Wintec works great as the high refresh rate make for good data logging in MaxQData. If I get around to it one of these days, I'm going to put MS pocket streets on the Dell Axim PDA that came with the MaxQData and see if its a good dedicated GPS unit for navigation. Hopefully, the iPhone will get a good turn-by-turn update for Google Maps with the next major firmware update and I won't need to use the Dell.

I've got one of the ones that comes with MS Streets & Trips... Works great. If you watch sales, they are <$40.
