Default HD Cam that can be used at the track

I'm looking for a HD cam that will survive a ride in the car and not suffer from recording skip when i .

was surfing new egg and this is what i have found so far but i'm not a AV person so no clue if it's any good.

    Bad Idea (TM)

It has a hard drive in it. You want a camera that does NOT have a hard drive, but rather a memory card. All those vibrations will destroy a hard drive.

Also, avoid cameras that have optical image stabilization capabilities. You want either NO image stabilization or electronic image stabilization where it uses the outer pixels on the imaging chip for stabilization via software processing. This way you don't have a floating optical element to destroy via vibrations.

Other than that, get something cheap enough that you won't be hurt too bad if it dies a horrible death.

Several people have the Hero and seem to like it. I don't know that it is HD, though.
On the track, I am fearless.
If you were as slow as me, you wouldn't be afraid either.

jeff_man, I have an extra Winbook HD camcorder that I will let go for $45. It takes 720p video and works with SDHC cards. It's solid state with fixed focus lens.

ya the hero is nice but the res is to low or i would have gotten one

I believe the HDcams with harddrives have a SD card option so the drive is not spinning and read/writing but i'm not 100% sure on that.

alen what do you mount that cam with? if i can't find a modal with 60fps and it has a universal tripod mount so i can put in on a roll bar mount i'm sold

    Jeff,

I use a camera similar to what Apex is using. You can't beat it for the price.

    As for mounts, try ChaseCam.

So Iain, how is video coming out from that TCB deal you got from Best Buy? It does not have wide angle?! Does it matter? I am thinking going your TCB route but not sure it is just money down the pit!?

I'm working on getting it from him but going to look into one of the roll ball mounts first sense i like there positioning in the car better.

The Hero's not HD, but it does have a wide angle lens - which is really nice at the track. If they ever make an HD Hero, I'd be all over it.

Isn't there one that's named the 2020 or something like that? From what I remember it is pretty small, uses a memory card, and records in HD.

Here is a short clip from mark52's CSP car:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6rlxrG3AvA

This doesn't really do the camera justice, though. Let me upload a short clip from the RX-8 on the track (much smoother) this evening, and you can see the difference.

I use a Flip Mino (SD) and love it. It's similar to a lot of the cameras already posted and comes in a HD variant. It's not exactly "cheap" tho.

    That VholdR looks pretty awesome.
