You should look at a used MK5 GTI.

A $599 APR flash wil get you more usable power than the Mazdaspeed 3 (less lag) and a better interior.

Plus Bi-Xenons and 6 Disk In Dash standard.

Used examples can be had for $13k - $15k.

If you want to take mine for a quick spin let me know... I have the stage 1 flash and suspension.

yeah, but we have no LSD, and without $2000 suspension, not enough negative camber in the front.

    And German electrics.

I'll take Japanese dead-reliability over German fit and finish any day.

    +1

VW/Audi great cars to lease. But I wouldn't want one out of warranty.

Yup. If the Golf came with Mazda bits under the skin, it would be the winnah!

    Fap fap fap...

Look at the JD Power or Consumer Reports for 2006+ (MK5) body VW's.

Electronic gremlins? You understand we are talking about 2000+ year model VAG products right?

The 1.8T and 2.0T have been very reliable powerplants.

The 1.8T had coilpack issues and the timing belt 60k and 100k maitenance discrepency covered by an extended powertrain coverage for 10 years.

There are many folks on the 2.0T Technical boards with > 100K on their 2006+ 2.0T's with no real issues. The only issue that I have seen is the cam sensor wear and that is addressed by inspection @ 20k - 30k mile increments.

Every car has their issues. The venerable Miata: thrust bearing; Mazdaspeed 3: broken engine mounts.

I clearly remember my Miata's idle dip... no real clear fix besides blipping the throttle.

I personally have owned 2 - 1.8T GTI's and two 2.0T GTI's and had no real issues outside of an 02 sensor and a $60 flap actuator valve. One of those 1.8T's was pushing 20lbs of boost with a bigger turbo... I had that for 20k trouble free - CEL free miles.

In for the responses from former VW owners...

My one experience with owning a VW was miserable, but it was about 18 years ago, so I can't personally comment on current VW products. I do know my boss's '99 Jetta TDI does have some bizarre electrical gremlins, like the sunroof opening of it's own accord while we're driving down the freeway.

Between my g/f and me, our two 2001 Audi products were great cars with absolutely inexcusably shitty electrical issues...
