I drove an nc last week. Sport package and I liked it. A lot of torque, smooth ride, refined more than my nb. I didn't buy it but it was a great car.
wow! but not in a good way...i just drove an '09 base model(i'm at the dealer for a new pcm) and compared to my '01 base model it is a completly different animal, in fact, not an animal at all. it's soft, suspension, clutch, steering, everything. Why has mazda(and all others, 240,260,280, etc) decided to fluff the miata(sorry, MX-5). it has none of the purety of previous generations. i guess mazda wants to appeal to a more "mature" audience but they missed me(i'm 33 and past my kiddy faze of burnouts etc..) i won't be getting one today(although there is a nice used '97 on the lot....do i really need a third car?) just my 2 cents.

The NC is just a set of springs away from a great Miata.
I test drove a 5SP base and a 6SP loaded NC while shopping for my car. Both were nice, but I'll have to say I prefered the 5SP over the 6SP (that includes my car's). That said, I still took my NB MSM over either. It just felt more "right" to me.
I DO like those Duratec 4's though. Evil little motors with a ton of potential.
Missing my Miata...

I would take a NC over a NA/NB anyday if I could pick one for free. A little bit of suspension and some 285 tires and it will come close to handing a car 3X it's price it's ass.

I have a low mileage 99 and an 06; at first I didn't care for the NC as much, but it has really grown on me. I really like the extra torque and power. EVERYONE is thumbs up on the new Miata and tells me I'm crazy to consider keeping the 99 over the 06. I really like them both, but the 06 is pulling ahead in this contest...
