Thread: Does anybody here want to save a dog's life?

Default Does anybody here want to save a dog's life?

For those of you who don't know, I do some dog rescue work. Eighteen abused Siberian Huskies were removed from a residence in Collin County about a week ago. Those dogs were just released by the court this weekend. We have found at least temporary homes for all but 7 of them. I am taking one to a new home in Tulsa tomorrow. We need homes for the seven that are left as soon as possible. If we don't get them out of the pound soon they will be put to sleep.

If anybody here has ever wanted a Siberian Husky, this would be a great time to get one. If anybody wants to save the life of one of these dogs, we could use temporary foster homes as well.

My buddy has two of them so I forwarded him this post. They seem like great puppy dogs, but I don't know that much about them. I've been thinking of adopting another pup to keep my mutt company... would you recommend a Husky? Do they need to run in pairs/packs? They're very sweet, but they seem a little wild at times - wolfy, one might say.

My mutt is, um, severely domesticated - short legged, very lazy, and almost catlike in her ability to follow most commands.

Hmmm... tempting but I have a small dog that will be 17 this Christmas. It wouldn't be fair to her to have a young dog around.

I was thinking the same thing, and did some research. I hate to block a potential home for these awesome dogs, but the places I read said that cats are not a good idea. They have a strong predator instinct.

Ah, that may be a problem.

We love our cats. We just want to ADD a dog.

What type of personality do the cats have? I had 2 cats when we added a Chow, and we never had any problems. The cats were there first so it was definitely their turf, but the big reason I think it worked was the type A personality of our older cat. While I had the dog on the leash day 1, she went up to him, hissed, and popped him in the nose. From then on, she would hiss if he got too close, and he would back off.

I would love to but I don't have a yard for a large dog and my cats would throw a coniption fit.

My big kitty (~18lbs) grew up with a chow/shepard mix. He got used to wrestling and sleeping with the dog, so he expects most dogs to be his friend. If the dog was aggresive towards him it might get ugly; he killed 2 cats in our backyard in California. I don't want to place bets on that fight.

The other cat is terrified of dogs and would just run away and hide.

What are the ages and sizes of these dogs? Do they get to be over 100 lbs? Are they trained at all? Do they get along with smaller dogs?

Looks like we saved them all. I will post links to the rescue groups that have them as soon as they are up so you can get the details. One of them landed here.

All of the dogs were saved. Nobody got put to sleep.
