I don't even want to click that link in fear of what sites like that try to load on your PC

Also if it's an old a$$ PC, no website is going to make it faster
A little defrag now and again doesn't hurt either

From what I have seen on TV, no. It doesnt seem to be able to do anymore than you could without software.

I was checking my DSL speed and the speed is for FIO service. My PC is the first gen dual core. So it is old by today's standard. I guess I save my pennies for a netbookd down the road.

Your bottleneck will be your internet speed. It's generally the slowest thing.

However, your wireless may also be a bottleneck if you are using 802.11b which is 11mb half-duplex (5.5mb max speed)... If that's the case, upgrade to 802.11g or n wireless.

Next, how much memory do you have? If you are running XP then you need 1Gb to run well. Vista? 2Gb. It's a pig. With any less then you are spending too much CPU type swapping out chunks of memory to the hard drive. It's called "virtual memory" and is a factor of 1000 times slower than just using real RAM.

In this era of cheap memory, you should just max out your box and be done with it. You'd be surprised at how much faster your PC will be with the extra memory.

The only software solutions I've ever seen to speed up a computer drastically were caching software (which only shows improvements on slow internet connections like dial-up or very low speed broadband) or registry clean up software. Just BEWARE that there are a lot of cleaner software programs out there that are just spyware and simply infect your machine.

Basically, it's all buyer beware on software solutions. I find hardware generally does a better job as speeding things up.

A netbook likely has less processing power than your current box btw. They have single core Atom CPUs which are designed more for battery life than processing power.

And no, don't use that site.

Yeah don't get a netbook, I got one and it can't even run a lot of video. It's good for surfing and that's about it.
