Thread: Time to Gingsu a Miata

  1. #1

Default Time to Gingsu a Miata

    Party at Titus' house.

    When: Sunday, Nov 1st, 10am
    Where: Titus' crib
What: We will be taking a sawsall to his Miata shell to cut it in half.
Why: Besides being fun? I will be using the front half to repair Widow. The other half will be scrapped unless someone needs sheet metal from the back end.

Please RSVP to me so I can give you an address and get an idea of how many hands we will have.
    ...and across the line.

Interested, but if there is but a single sawzall, how many hands will you really be able to use? I could probably snag one or two from work if there's room for them...and you have extra blades hanging around.

What will need to be done:

    • Remove front and rear sub-frames: (4 bolts each)
    • Remove 2 doors
    • Remove Gas Tank
    • Cut front half off
    • Lift each piece of car on to trailer

We should be fine with the one sawzall... I told BR to buy a 5-pack of long metal cutting blades. We will likely need at least 4 people for the last step.

Buy the lenox blades, they are 10 times better than the blue mol and milwakee brands.

Titus, you have 220 and an air compressor right? If so I can bring the plasma and make quick work of that car.

Yep... I * believe* I installed a 220v 30A locking outlet that takes the plug pictured below. I would go out and double check, but it is pouring rain here right now.

L5-30 or L6-30? The pic you showed is an L5-30 and those should only be 120 volt.

If its L6-30 then we are good. that is what I have on my plasma and extension cord.

Cool guys. Thanks for the help.

I'll get blades for the sawsalls and/or we can use the plasma cutter.

    See y'all there.

I have an extra sawzall (maybe 2) and a plasma cutter if there is a use for it (not advised unless there is zero fuel spillage from the other cuts :) )

If nobody has claimed it yet... I could sure use the rear half of the shell... I am going to make skinning molds for the miata rear fenders.

Plus I'd get a chance to meet some of the other Miata people. I've been a damn hermit too long.

Edit... I just saw hudsonhawk's post about the plasma.. so make it a second plasma cutter. My portable Hobart uses 115v and has internal air compressor.

I've been looking at the Hobart 250... are you happy with it? Does it cut most things you need it to or are you hitting cases where you wish you had the 400?

Nope, its awesome. Any automotive sheet metal or structural metal (hollow core of course) it's like a hot knife. Will do solid bars and other 'real' metals well, just requires a follow-up cut sometimes. I primarily only use this for tubing, exhaust fab, and body sheet metal. Too bad it doesnt cut carbon fiber....I'd use it for that too.
