Thread: Crunch! Early Christmas gift

    Default Crunch! Early Christmas gift

My fiance and I were on I-30 on Sunday night on our way to the NTS2KOC dinner and lights drive. All of the sudden, everyone in front of us was hard on the brakes. I got on the binders, but I knew that I was not going to stop in time. There was no left shoulder on this part of the freeway that I could use. I took a glance to the right lane and saw no one, so I made a break for it, but it was too little too late. I still hit the Accord in front of me with my left front. Her car just got a scuff on the right rear bumper, but mine took it pretty hard in the left front. I think it is just body damage as the car drives just fine. I will know more later when I start taking it a part. I know that I will need a left front fender and bumper cover. The hood looks okay. If I had not tried for the right lane and hit the Accord with the center of my car, then I would have messed up both fenders, maybe my hood, and my airbag might have popped. Everyone is okay and the Accord driver was very nice. I'm glad that she took the initiative to pull off the freeway for info exchange instead of wanting to block traffic.

Damn...there sure has been a rash of Miata's getting crunched lately. Looks like just sheet metal damage for the most part. Glad y'all didn't get hurt.

That sucks that you got to join the crowd. We are good company though. Hope it gets fixed good as new.

Sorry to hear about the damage, Jerrett. Is Leilanie reconsidering yet?

He has the technology, he'll build better, faster, stronger... :)

Good to see you and Leilani didn't get any big bumps and bruises.

Bummer, glad no one was hurt. At least the most expensive part of the car is intact, the shocks :)

Ha! After Leilane and the other driver, that was my primary concern, too!

I think it is worse than it looked. Compare the pics of the left and right sides.

Still looks like tweaked sheet-metal to me. Don't see anything structural.

Find an O'Reilly's and borrow the slide hammer. See if they have the attachment to pull dents.

Should not be a problem reshaping it.

    You off this week?

It is going to take some replacing of peices that are welded to the frame, which is beyond my limits, so I talked to Stevan (Miata Solutions) and he says he can fix it in January. I will just continue my other off-season work and let him take it in January. It will look great going to his place missing the bumper cover and fender. I'll go after dark and wearing a POS Racing mask.

I would consider driving it over to him or a good frame shop and making sure that the car can still align to spec. You can have a very small tweak that is hard to see that affects the frame. It would be a shame to do all the extra off-season work and then find out you need to start fresh a month later.
