    Default GPS Traffic

    Short version:
What is the general consensus as to the most reliable, accurate, quick-to-update in-car traffic service for the D/FW area?

    Long version:
I drive from south Fort Worth (Burleson ISD) to Addison to work. I'm currently on a 7 on/7 off 6 to 6 schedule, usually working nights. For traffic, I tune to KRLD, wait for an update or two, pick a route, and switch to listening to my USB drive full of CDs converted to .WAV files. This usually (but not always) keeps me out of major problems. There is talk at work of switching me to a M-F 9-5 position, which would have me traveling with the predominant traffic flow about 4 times more often than now. With that in mind, I am considering replacing my current head unit (which I really like) with a double-din, GPS, traffic-capable unit if the schedule change goes through. Before I make any decisions in that area, I'd like others opinions as to whether in-car traffic updates are timely and accurate enough to make it worth purchasing a GPS and traffic capable in-dash unit and annual subscription.

    Thanks

I've actually found Google Maps on my iPhone to be pretty accurate for traffic congestion. YMMV

Wow even if you get something with great traffic reporting capabilities isn't traffic going to suck anyhow??

How do yo get to Addison? 121 and 183 suck in the mornings.

Speaking of iPhone, I do wish that there were a way that rather of having the map info downloaded at every turn that the info already resided in the phone memory itself. This way it would be quicker using the 3g network concerning finding your current location more accurately. However, when I say all the info in the phone itself, I don't mean as in every nook and cranny of the globe itself, but rather all the pertinent info for whichever metropolitan area you may currently be in.

iPhone doesn't have a GPS antenna?

+1 for Google Maps crowd sourced data.

I use the Navigon GPS app (iPhone) for directions, much better than my Garmin portable unit. However I'm not sure if it has traffic capability.

Traffic usually is miserable if I have to drive with the rush hour flow. I try to avoid 183; I usually take I20 to 408 to 12 to 35E to 635 to Midway. If there are accidents, though, I may take 35W to 121/183 to 635 or 820 to 121/183 to 635, or the toll road if it is the best alternative. The trick is finding out about accidents early enough to change routing.
