Thread: Need a little help...

    Default Need a little help...

Ok, so my mechanic gives me a hell of a deal on upgrading the Miata so I put her in the shop to get a JRSC M45,Power card, liquid intercooler & JR headers. Put the car in the shop last Monday and got her back on Wedensday and she ran like a beast. Filled her up with Premium(as instructed) at the lovely RaceTrac and she started running horrible....lots of popping..back firing..all kinds of crap. Took her back only to find out I had water in the gas.....great.

He drains the tank, flushes the fuel system, cleans the injectors, replaces the fuel filter and plugs then fills her back up with Premium. I pick her up and again she runs fantastic.

The next day, she starts to really bog down on acceleration. Idles fine, runs fine until you start giving her gas and then it's like she's just not getting enough gas or something. I took her back told him to check all connections, vaccum hoses etc. I went back to get her and he told me it's not fixed but to drive another tank of premium in her and bring it back next week(he's having surgery today).

I don't know enough about supercharging to figure this one out. I know he told me the timing was advanced 10 deg. Could it be the fuel filter again? I need some insite on this one..I'm even willing to meet someone so they can check out the symptoms. Please help on this one!

Have you considered taking it over to Track Dog Racing?

I've never delt with them but they are right around the corner from me. I can run by at lunch. Anyone in particular?

I'd try another fuel filter, but I'd still go talk to Gary.

Yeah, I was thinking about changing the fuel filter when I get home. I was thinking maybe plug wires also but I don't wanna just do a bunch of stuff aimless. I'm going to TrackDog at lunch and see what they say.

But wasn't the fuel filter already changed this week?

Could still be some residual crap in the tank, and the FF is a cheap Easter egg hunt.

    That is true!

Also look at this - http://www.supercharger.com/graphics...ns/999-170.pdf

They have a troubleshooting section one thing I noticed:
    SYMPTOM: No power during boost.
PROBABLE CAUSES: Cross over tube loose; Idle Compensator not connected/not functioning
CURE: Check fuel lines for kinking. Check the cross over tube to see that it is well connected at both ends. Check Idle Compensator electrical connections, check its resistance; should be approximately 22k ohms

Yes it was but changed but since he drained the tank(he didn't remove it totally) I was thinking maybe there was some more gunk in the tank that got sucked up in there too. And like you said, the cheapest starting point.

The way the symptoms started..it has to be something simple.

The pickup screen in the tank could be clogged or the fuel pump is unable to keep up. I would do a fuel pump pressure/flow test first. Or better yet have Gary do it.

I at first though about the fuel pump but it will stutter even when i'm not opening her up. I can be just crusing in 4th at like 30-40 mph..step on the gas a bit and it starts..if..i i keep pressing the pedal and start really giving the gas..it will eventually like "catch up" and off she goes. I can even get it to do it simply shifting from 2nd to 3rd and give just a little gas.

I have run a forced induction car though that was running rich and the whole "floor it and it lugs and then finally powers through it and runs right" sounds just like it.

    Just sayin'.

Either that or the timing is retarded to much.

OK! Problem solved!!! Gary at TDR is the man! A very simple fix...new plug wires. We talked for a while and he even taught me a thing or two! He just got a new customer that's for damn sure!

Thanks for all the input from everyone..that trip to TDR save a lot of time and money!
