Thread: NT-01 vs Star Spec

    Default NT-01 vs Star Spec

This is interesting. At the Dec 12 ECR toy event I ran a 2:05.404 on NT-01. Feb 20 track day at ECR on Star Specs I ran a 2:05.534. Both day had very similar conditions. The track was cold, had some damp spots.

The only change to the car was Koni SA to AST DA 4200. Is the Star Spec that good? Are the AST shocks that good? Is it a combo?

Don't forget the possible improvement with the nut behind the wheel too.

Are the spring rates the same on the ASTs?

Star Specs are great tires, but I hope they're not as good as NT01's since I have a set on the way to replace my well-worn Star Specs. It would suck to give up all that tire life and all-weather usability for no improvement in lap times.

I think KenO has enough laps at ECR that his lap times are consistent enough to make some comparisons. I think that the ASTs ARE a big step up from Koni SAs so I don't think that you can attribute these lap times to the Star Specs all together.

Same springs (rates) as the Koni.

The data overlay shows the same G forces with each tire. It could be the adj. compression on the ASTs allowing the tire to work harder instead of compressing and shifting the weight. The shock is limiting the compression thus applying more pressure to the downward force on the wheel?

Driver improvement could be a factor but it has only been 2 months between events. I don't think FM3 helps that much.

I thought your NT01's were nearly shot at the toy run event, maybe fresh vs dead tires?

Ken had the exact same springs on the car as the TCK setup. Only change was to Dunlop Star Specs (street tires) to Nitto NT-01s, from TCKs to 4200s, and from TCK plates to Vorshlag camber/caster plates.

(KenO at the ECR Toy Run on Dec 12, 2009)

The Nitto NT-01 is a DOT legal competition radial with a treadwear of 100 (below, left). The Dunlop Star Specs are 200 treadwear UHP street tires, with lots of void ratio (below, right). They should not have the same grip.

    The AST4200s are that good.

The NT-01s were worn. The edge corded on day 2. The fastest time was day one. The mid section and inside of the NT01s were fine. I could have done another day or two if I flipped them.

They freakin' should be, for what they cost.

Just kidding, Terry. I've liked the ASTs on every car I've driven. Just out of my budget right now.

the dunlops are awesome! but, they can't hang with the nt-01's. going from star specs to nt-01's i dropped 1.9 sec. on a 1.8 mile track. the ast's are that good! is that why you were so fast at msr-h? i want ast coilovers. sooo, are you guys (AST of north america) looking to sponsor a Tx. miata challenge unlimited class car? come on, maybe split the cost of your incredible suspension system? lol... sorry, had to try.

Nope. I was on the Koni SAs at MSR-H.
Can't wait until NASA TT at MSR-C, AST 4200 and Vorshlag camber plates.

This jibes with my experience. Star Specs are about 2 seconds off of RA1's for me on a 1:30ish lap.
