Wanting to go, but can't afford to do any major work on my car. What is everyones thoughts on running at Hallett as a novice on el cheapo street tires and stock brake pads (fresh fluid).

If you're a true novice, I actually think cheap tires are perfect. You won't be out to record lap times. Your goal will to become a smoother, more confident driver.
Stock brake pads will be just fine; just be sure you have at least 50% pad left (especially up front) and fresh brake fluid.

Don't look...there's nothing down here for you!
My only experience other than a single AX in this car was doing some AX and a track day at MSR in my '97 miata several years ago. So I can say for certain I'm a novice. =) As for brakes I figured if I go fresh fluid is a must and the pads are almost full, (Carmax replaced them before I bought the car) Guess I need to talk the wife into letting me do this now =/

i try and barrow someone stock or almost stock with street wheel when i go to the track. you have more fun in non race cars some times when you have been driving on rcomps and extra power.

A local Viper driver landed on the turn 8 tirewall at Hallett on Friday. He got it back on the track later, but then his hood pins broke between turn 1 and 2. The hood broke his windshield and rear glass. I will post pics later. It wasn't his lucky day on Friday the 13th.

As Tommy Archer would say "That pig just couldn't fly..." Looks like he faired fairly well for that get off. Still that's the last thing I would want to see at any track event. Suxa!

the m3 guy is such a whiner. dont go to the track with expectations of driving your car home everytime. s### happens. always bring an extra 3-600$ LMFAO and and some parts
He's posted a video now. Looks alot like the we saw on here earlier. So sad to see such a beauty cracked up. At least he has a good attitude about it.
Yep, glad to see he had a good attitude about it. I mean it is an inherent risk. We take risks, not chances...right? Tough get off, but was cool to see him drive off under his own power after the mele.

Just watched the M3 vid and all I can say is what a whiner. I guess he thought those racing gloves made him Schummy or something. You have to expect the worst when you go to the track. Hell when I took the bike to the track I was fully prepared to come home with a wadded up bike. Yeah it stung the ego like hell when I tossed it into turn 11 at ECR but I would go out again and will with the new one when I get it. Same for the car as well.

I think I know why he threw his little tantrum now that I have had my Z4 for 2 months now. Searching the BMW forums for DIY's and modding info I noticed that most of these guys have never worked on a car and usually trade them in when the ashtray gets full, most of the DIY request and info is more "where can I have somebody put this on my car" or "my mechanic told me..." or "I had the dealership do this". They don't seem to be like the Miata enthusiasts that enjoy getting dirty and fixing things themselves when we break them. More than likely because of the economy he had to leave his mechanic at home back in the Hamptons and wasn't going to be able to get home with scratches all over the bumper.![]()

That M3 guy was a tool. Could have asked the instructor if he was hurt.
My Hallett video.
Cool slow motion
Plus I work on the car myself. That is why I am replacing an oil line that rubbed on a pulley. FTW!
M3 is always the answer.
That slow mo vid shows Ken's front left wheel almost off the ground at :10 unlike the Vette and Viper who were braking there and getting their rear ends light at the crest. Doesn't look like Ken brakes til :19 where he's on a mostly straight approach downhill to the bitch. Nice vids Ken and you're the exception to most bmw drivers.
If you watch the video with the overlay you can see I brake really hard before the hill and turn in. I think most lose it here because they brake on the hill. Not a good thing. The car crest the hill, rear is already light from braking, rear unloads more from topping the hill and hello tire wall.
M3 is always the answer.
Just a side thought. Most instructors tell there student to only brake in a STRAIT LINE. If those drivers were braking in a strait line they probably could have avoided the tire wall.
(I'm also not saying that there isn't a time when you can't brake in a strait line, just breaking on the curve and a hill = tire wall)
Blah blah blah!
