    Looking for additional data storage.

I have a desktop running XP and a laptop running Vista.

I also have an external 500 GB USB drive.

I want to increase storage to an additional 1 TB.

I've been looking at the Western Digital My Book World Edition 1TB Network Attached Storage

    Price range is >$200

    ...and across the line.

WD drives tend to burn out and start clicking and losing sectors early. I know because I have had 5 different models from all the way back to 2004. History repeats itself for them I guess lol.
I've had no problems with Seagate drives though. Last year they had a couple of bad batches (isolated incident) but nothing since then. Just be sure to read the reviews on newegg of the specific drive in the NAS before you buy.
If you aren't going to be using it constantly then the WD might work for you.

Edit: I have always been a heavy gamer and also test different Linux distributions often, so all those read/writes are what killed em for me. Had better luck with Seagate but YMMV.

In the last 10 years or so, I have had 2 WD drives go bad out of about 20. I have had multiple issues with Seagate, Fujitsu, Toshiba, IBM, and Maxtor. WD does have the longest mgtf warraties in the biz. 3 years on most of their consumer products and 5+ on their enterprise lines.

I suggested the WB world book for for what I believe is its ease of setup, relaiblity, performace , and previous experience.
