Thread: 6pt or 4pt harness for track days?

Default 6pt or 4pt harness for track days?

My wife got me a Sparco Speed 2 seat for my birthday . I'll just be doing the occasional track day in my car, should I send my seat back and get one (Sparco Sprint perhaps) with the submarine hole or will a 4pt harness be fine for doing track days?

Also, I got the side mount brackets from Sparco and discovered that the Speed 2 does not have side mount holes (doh!). What brackets do I need to mount my seat?

I'm going to assume you already have a rollbar and skip that discussion.

I would definitely run with anti-submarine belts, either a 5 or 6-point. When I had my Sprint, I used a 6-point setup. I did not have a submarine belt hole, so I anchored the sub belts to the seat mounting structure and ran the belts up through the side belt holes. You sit on the belts and then draw them up over your groin, like a rapelling harness. This is an approved mounting configuration, or at least it was several years ago.

The lap belt of the 4-point harness will ride up on you unless it's so damn tight that you can't breathe - and even then it'll ooch up a little.

I've got a roll bar installed. Thanks for the info about the sub belt. I didn't realize you could run them like that. I'll get a six point harness when the time comes.

newbie question.....where are the anchor points on a 6 point harness?

I get the 2 over the shoulder, 2 for the lap, and one on the crotch would be 5....where is 6? just a second on on the crotch?

The one for the crotch is usually two belts that attach with one clip; the belts attach to the car at 6pts and to the buckle with 5 clips.

+1 on the 6pt. I had a 6pt on a previous car. I run a 4pt in the M3. I can't get the shoulder belts tight enough without the lap riding up on the 4pt.
    M3 is always the answer.

Cut a little hole in the seat for the 5th-point and go at an angle that permits nut clearance. It only holds the lap belt/hasp in position and won't crush your genetic legacy.
