Thread: 2nd xpndr key needed (I lost one)

Default 2nd xpndr key needed (I lost one)

I lost a key for my '01. I have one original key. Is there a way to get a new one without handing a dealership $200? I know that if you have 2 keys, you can use the car to program a 3rd key. Also, if I do go the dealer route, will I be able to program more using that method, or do the two keys have to be originals?

I checked and didn't see any threads that talked about this.. please excuse if it is a repost.

Looks to me like a locksmith wouldn't work.

I got a key made for the wifes 2002 Miata at Michael's Keys in Colleyville about a year ago.

Only took one key & they didn't seem to have any issues and it still works so yea take it to the the dealer.

It seems that the dealer I went to just didn't do it right... The one in Richardson off 75 BTW. Gonna try a different dealer now. Thanks POS Racing!

Check differnt dealers. My father lost a key to his Cadillac a couple of years ago and checked around. Eldorado Chevy was a lot cheaper than the place he bought it from.

Just an FYI went with Onething this spring to Michael Keys to get Key's made for his pimp daddy lac. Had the old school GM chip in them they made him a couple sets no issues. For far less $$$ than any Caddy dealer!

Anyone but me seeing a trend!

Michael's made one for me a couple of months ago. About $65. Wal Mart makes them also but not for Mazda.

They cut a key that they couldn't program. Then they told me I needed a new PCM. Then when I refused, they wanted me to pay $35 for the key they cut. I ended up walking away.

BTW the service manual has instructions for programming a key using the ignition.. You will need either two working keys, or one working key and the "code" (8 digits, numeric "1-9") for your immobilizer.
