Durango's don't have pickup beds, but Dakotas do.

And Durangos are not going to be your bag. I bought one for my now ex, with the 5.9l. Running gear wise it was great, sucked gas and hauled a**. It was plagued with front end issues that have been found out to be recall problems from the start. I hear also that it has lost its serpentine several times, overheated, and tranny problems. All of these after the divorce - of course! :)
I use to worry about money; but then realized I don't HAVE anything to worry about.
Not to bag on American vehicles, but just about every one I have worked on at various shops has needed yearly front end parts replacement. Ball joints, idler arms, pitman arms, etc etc, all would crap out in about 10k miles, if that. Stock parts, NAPA replacement parts, other "OE-quality" replacement parts...pretty much any part that wasn't designed by some offroading company to specifically address the problem. The better part of my days at these shops was spent rebuilding American truck front ends. This was up to 2005, so I have no idea if newer trucks are a different story or not.
/\ I don't either. Last American I had was a '61 Chevy PU. They definately don't make 'em like they used to. :)

I've been told the Dakota has had ball joint issues. The 4runner is looking pretty attractive. As a bonus, I think the early 2000s models ARE better looking than the current iterations.

Don't look...there's nothing down here for you!
4Runner is a solid truck, comfortable, reliable, and will still have some resale value no matter how long you keep it. Also, tons of repair parts and aftermarket for it.

The only problem I had with my 2001 4x4 Durango was a tweaked torsion bar. I messed it up on the trail up to to Engineer mountain from Ouray, CO. Otherwise it was a great truck. Only reason I traded it was the 4.7 was not up to the task of towing my old CJ-5 behind it.
Would this be the "fun car to drive" you are looking at?
